Elden Ring Nightreign may receive a two-player mode as part of a future post-launch update, according to new comments from the game's director, Junya Ishizaki. The upcoming co-op Elden Ring spin-off is built around multiplayer gameplay, which allows three players to team up against otherworldly enemies. Elden Ring Nightreign is one of the most anticipated titles of the year, offering potentially genre-defining multiplayer.

Nightreign is a multiplayer-focused experience set in the Elden Ring universe. Elden Ring Nightreign has been designed to allow for solo play or three-player squads. However, there is no way to play as a fixed two-person team without automatically being matched with a third player. Elden Ring Nightreign will feature a signature dark fantasy world while introducing a greater focus on co-op play.

In an interview with IGN, Elden Ring Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki addressed the issue of two-player co-op. Ishizaki acknowledged the lack of support for duo play in Elden Ring Nightreign and hinted that FromSoftware is actively considering the option for extended co-op support in the future. He admitted this limitation was a product of oversight from the development team rather than an intentional design choice. "The simple answer is that this was simply something that was overlooked during development," Ishizaki said. He added, "We kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect."

Developer Considering Duo Mode After Launch

While Ishizaki made it clear that Elden Ring Nightreign was built from the ground up as a trio-based game, which included extensive testing to balance the game for that specific format, he verified that the studio is considering adding support for two-player teams for Elden Ring Nightreign in a future update. Although this is far from a confirmation of the mode in a later patch, it seems that expansion of co-op gameplay could very well happen for those who prefer duos.

In addition to the three-player parties, Elden Ring Nightreign was always going to have a solo mode. Ishizaki noted that players, including himself, often want to enjoy their games at their own pace. Ishizaki also confirmed that solo play is going to be more challenging, without other players helping with revives. However, there's a self-reviving feature that can be discovered on the map.

With a game designed for both solo play and three-player teams, a two-player mode, requested by Elden Ring fans, doesn't seem too much of a leap. However, FromSoftware is known for intricate detail, tight gameplay balance, and finely-tuned difficulty settings, so simply adding or removing a player might not be suitable for the studio.
