The various spells and incantations in Elden Ring Nightreign work a little bit differently from how they did in the original Elden Ring. As such, even the most seasoned Soulsborne fans may find themselves taking a little bit of time to figure out how the mechanics work here.
This guide, will explain everything you need to know about how to cast spells in Elden Ring Nightreign, and provide examples of what spells can be cast with which weapons.
Elden Ring Nightreign: How to Restore FP
Elden Ring Nightreign makes recovering FP a touch more complicated than the original Elden Ring did, but there are still plenty of ways to do it.
How to Cast Spells and Incantations in Elden Ring Nightreign
Both spells and incantations can be cast by pressing RB or RT on your Xbox controller when you have a staff or sacred seal equipped in the character's right hand. If it's equipped in their left hand, you'll use LB and LT. The first spell in the list when you select a staff or seal, will be the one you perform with the LB/RB button, while the second on the list is performed with the LT/RT button. The inputs on all platforms are:
Xbox
- First Spell: LB or RB
- Second Spell: RB or RT
PC
- First Spell: LMB or RMB
- Second Spell: Q or Ctrl + LMB
PlayStation
- First Spell: L1 or R1
- Second Spell: L2 or R2
Players can equip two staves, or a staff in one hand and a sacred seal in the other, and have four different spells or incantations equipped at any given time. This would require players to use all the button inputs noted above to activate the first and second spells on each weapon, respectively.
It's worth noting, however, that spells aren't found around the world in Elden Ring Nightreign like they were in the original game. Instead, every Glintstone Staff or Sacred Seal that players find in the world will come automatically equipped with two spells. The spells themselves don't have stat requirements, meaning any of the Nightfarers in Elden Ring Nightreign can use them. However, a staff or sacred seal itself can have a level requirement, meaning the truly powerful variants in the game can't be used immediately in a round.
There is one other way to cast spells, and that's via the Recluse Nightfarer's Magic Cocktail ability. This allows them to gain elemental affinity residues from enemies and cast a powerful spell using them with Y+LT on Xbox, Triangle+L2 on PlayStation, and E on PC.
Check out this comprehensive Magic Cocktail Combinations guide for the best way to make use of the Recluse's abilities in Elden Ring Nightreign.
Which Weapons Cast Spells and Incantations in Elden Ring Nightreign
Players should be aware that only Glintstone Staves, or staffs, can be used to cast sorceries or spells in Elden Ring Nightreign, while Sacred Seals are used to cast incantations. Much like in the original game, sorceries are more focused on offensive spellcasting, enabling you to deal damage from distance. Incantations are more focused on buffing you and your party, healing, or applying status effects, though there are also some purely attack-focused incantations. Fextralife has an extensive breakdown of all sorceries and incantations in Elden Ring Nightreign for players looking for a more in-depth look at what spells can be found with each specific staff and seal in the game.
