To balance combat and difficulty for those diving into Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree with fully built characters and OP builds, FromSoftware has introduced a separate leveling system unique to the DLC area in the form of the Scadutree Fragment s.

Collecting and using these Fragments to obtain the Scadutree Blessing is the main way for players to increase their strength in the Shadow Realm. Here’s how.

How to Get Scadutree Fragments in Shadow of the Erdtree

Similar to Golden Seed s and Sacred Tear s, Scadutree Fragments can be found spread out across the open world in the DLC, mainly obtainable via exploration.

  • Miquella’s Crosses: Miquella’s Footsteps or Crosses are giant, glowing yellow landmarks in the shape of a large scythe that are typically found near a Site of Grace. Beneath every Cross will be a single purple item containing a Scadutree Fragment.
  • Shadow Pot Enemies: Among the new enemy types introduced in the DLC are the Shadows—pitch-black undead enemies that often move in groups. There are different variants of these Shadow enemies, and one of them is instantly recognizable by a glowing pot it carries on its head, supported by both hands. Killing the Shadow Pot enemy has a chance of dropping a Scadutree Fragment or a Revered Spirit Ash (or nothing at all).
  • Headless Statues: During exploration, players will encounter large statues of a headless woman with her arms wide open (presumably, this is Marika). Underneath each statue will be a Scadutree Fragment.
  • Boss Drops: Certain bosses in Shadow of the Erdtree—like the Golden Hippopotamus—have a 100% chance to drop a Scadutree Fragment.

Shadow Pot enemies are not farmable for Scadutree Fragments.

How to Use Scadutree Fragments in Shadow of the Erdtree

Players can use Scadutree Fragments at any Site of Grace.

  1. Interact with the Site of Grace to bring up the menu.
  2. Select ‘Shadow Realm Blessing’.
  3. Choose ‘Scadutree Blessing’.
  4. Click ‘YES’ when prompted.

If you have enough Fragments to increase the level of your Blessing, it will go up by one. The first level of the Blessing costs 1 Fragment, but the price for subsequent upgrades goes up.

Scadutree Blessing increases the damage you deal and reduces the damage you take by a fixed percentage. The boost to survivability is massive, and something players should actively seek out if they’re having trouble tackling content in the DLC.

The effects of Shadow Realm Blessings (Revered Spirit Ash and Scadutree) are confined to the Shadow Realm and will have no effect in the base game.

To give an idea of how much of a difference the Scadutree Blessing makes, a level 180 character without any blessings loses half of their HP when hit by a single attack from an enemy in the starting area. The same character, with the same gear and talismans but with one Scadutree Blessing, loses one-third of their HP when hit by the same attack. Obtaining these Fragments and Blessings is not required to play, but it will make surviving a whole lot easier.
