It upgrades with Somber Smithing Stones and has a powerful Ash of War that makes it very viable in PvP combat, though it falls a little short in PvE but is still quite usable with the right setup.

A follow-up will cause the barbs within to unfold, devastating the enemy player from within and dealing incredible damage. If the player is against an NPC, the attack will go through them, and the follow-up will cause an AoE attack that sees a collection of golden barbs rise from the ground underneath the player.

When playing the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, 40 Vigor is almost a requirement if you don't plan on doing a hitless run. Anything less, and you run the risk of becoming so squishy that bosses trample all over you if they land a single hit.
Keep as much endurance as you need to keep a medium roll with your desired armor set, and having at least 20 Mind is useful when using up as much as 30 FP with each cast of the skill.

How to Use The Greatsword of Damnation Build in Elden Ring
High faith means that players can use incanatations like the 
Multilayered Ring of Light to compensate for their lack of ranged options. All four talismans buff the attack power of the Greatsword of Damnation, though players will need to dual-wield the greatsword to get any legwork out of the Two-Handed Sword talisman.
Combine that with buffs like 
Howl of Shabriri and 
Golden Vow, and you've got a sword that slices through enemies like butter. The weapon skill deals decent AoE, so players can get rid of crowds of small enemies easily enough, but the same skill has a good amount of single target damage as well, making it suitable for bosses and elite enemies.
The skill doesn't take a lot of time to use, the recovery window is fairly small, and players get a decent amount of hyper armor when using the skill. Though this might not be a big deal in PvE gameplay, it becomes a major part of the plan in PvP. The initial hit acts like a grab attack, locking enemy players into place, and the subsequent attack cannot be dodged. The follow up will obliterate their HP, potentially one-shotting them if you have your buffs active.
Even if the enemy player dodges the initial attack, they can't punish you before you go through with the follow-up AoE attack, giving you enough space and time to recover and potentially dealing decent damage to them if they get greedy.
