Elden Ring will be getting a new update later this year that adds fresh content to the massive open world game. Elden Ring was a massive success immediately upon its launch in 2022, becoming one of the best-selling and highest-rated video games of all time. FromSoftware supported Elden Ring post-launch with free content updates that introduced quality-of-life features, added new content for fans to enjoy, and addressed some of the game's issues.

Then, in 2024, Elden Ring released its only expansion to date, the gigantic Shadow of the Erdtree. Shadow of the Erdtree earned near-universal acclaim, much like the base game, and has been hailed as one of the best video game DLCs of all time. In fact, Shadow of the Erdtree was so popular that it even found itself nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024.

With FromSoftware set to launch Elden Ring Nightreign at the end of May and The Duskbloods on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026, one would be forgiven for assuming that the original Elden Ring was done receiving new updates. However, it's now been confirmed that a new Elden Ring update will drop in 2025, adding new armor and weapons to the game. It's also been confirmed that fan-favorite Elden Ring mount Torrent will be getting some fresh customization options as well. A specific release date for the new Elden Ring content has not been announced at the time of this writing.

New Elden Ring Content is on the Way

The new Elden Ring content is coming as part of the game's release on the Nintendo Switch 2. Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition was revealed during the latest Nintendo Direct, with confirmation that it will be available for the Switch 2 at some point later in 2025. Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition features the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree as a single package, along with the armor, weapons, and Torrent customization features. More details on Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition should come to light in the months ahead.

With Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition announced for the Switch 2, some may be surprised that Elden Ring Nightreign has not been announced for Nintendo's new console. For the unfamiliar, Elden Ring Nightreign is a co-op centric, roguelite take on the Elden Ring formula, with groups of three exploring large open areas and working together to take down tough bosses. Nightreign seems like it would be a perfect fit for the Switch 2, but at least owners of Nintendo's new console can look forward to playing the original Elden Ring in the meantime.
