A new patch has been released for Elden Ring, addressing several key issues and fixing some glitches and bugs that have impacted both the base game and its Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. Elden Ring players will likely be glad to see glitches that affected enemy behavior and visual rendering get fixed, with FromSoftware also taking a close look at the game's performance on PlayStation 5 and PC.

Elden Ring and developer FromSoftware have had a banner year in 2024 thanks to the game's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. This massive paid expansion was the first and presumably last piece of DLC Elden Ring will see, introducing a daunting number of new weapons, items, areas, and, of course, terribly difficult bosses to encounter. Much like Elden Ring's original release, Shadow of the Erdtree quickly dominated the gaming world and has since become one of the best-selling DLCs of all time. As time moves on, FromSoftware continues to support both the expansion and Elden Ring, with the game's latest patch introducing several quality-of-life improvements.

Elden Ring's latest patch targets a variety of bugs that have been affecting gameplay for quite some time. Longtime players will be happy to see two particularly annoying bugs get fixed: one that caused unexpected rendering and behavior of some enemies, and another having caused sound effects to not play correctly. Another bug that prevented the use of ashes inside the battle arena for the Scadutree Avatar, one of many bosses featured in Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, has also been fixed.

This new patch is another in the long list of updates Elden Ring has received over the last few months and particularly aims to improve performance, specifically for PC and PlayStation users. FromSoftware now states that PlayStation 5 users may see better frame rates in Elden Ring by using the "Rebuild Database" option from the device's safe mode. Developers also state that PC Elden Ring players may be facing unstable frame rates due to third-party applications that control mouse behavior, encouraging users to deactivate these systems to see if the game runs better.

As stated earlier, Shadow of the Erdtree is presumably the final piece of extra DLC Elden Ring will receive, though developers played coy when asked about the future of the game. FromSoftware's next major title is still unknown, though many fans are hoping to see a direct sequel to Elden Ring. This makes sense from both a fan and business perspective, as Elden Ring far exceeded both FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco's expectations of the game by miles. Only time will tell, but for now, fans can always hop back into The Lands Between for another Elden Ring playthrough.

Possible unstable performance fixes

  • For the PS5 version of the game, unstable framerate may be improved by using the "Rebuild Database" option from the device’s safe mode.
  • In some PC versions, Ray Tracing may be unintentionally enabled and cause unstable performance. Please check the Ray Tracing setting in the "System" > "Graphics " > "Ray Tracing Quality" from the title screen or in-game menu.
  • In the PC version, the message "Inappropriate activity detected" may appear without cheating.

To fix this issue, please verify the integrity of the game's files before restarting the game.

  • In the PC version, unstable framerate may be caused by third party applications that control mouse behavior. Deactivating these third party applications may improve performance.
