To become a master thief in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is to know how to lockpick. Lockpicking in Oblivion can be a challenging thing for new players, especially with this creative system involved, but those who dare to become thieves will want to know how to effectively pick locks without having to worry about breaking their lockpicks to further prevent them from looting valuables.

Lockpicks are great for opening chests and doors that are otherwise inaccessible to those without the right key or authorization, so it’s going to be essential that players know how to pick locks in Oblivion so that they can catch the eye of the Thieves Guild and the Gray Fox.

How to Lockpick in Oblivion Remastered

When players approach a locked door or chest, they will be able to start the lockpicking minigame. While in this screen, players can move the lockpick horizontally to switch between the tumblers that they wish to interact with, and they will know which tumbler they are interacting with as the tip of the lockpick will be facing it.

Players will then want to move the lockpick vertically to push the tumbler inside the lock, as noted by how it presses into the springs. However, what players are looking for is the speed at which the tumbler presses in before springing out.

Lockpicking in Oblivion Remastered is all about patience, so in order to correctly pick locks, players will need to keep a close eye on the springs of the tumbler. Players will need to hit X/Left-Click as soon as the final spring is pushed up by the tumbler, as doing this as the tumbler is rising or falling will break the lockpick. Sometimes, the tumbler will move too fast, so players should just let the tumbler fall until it rises at a slow pace. The easiest way to click a tumbler into place is to keep pushing it up until it begins to rise slowly, as when it rises slowly, it indicates that it will hold its position up top before it falls slowly, providing players slightly more leniency to click it into place. If the tumbler rises slowly, then players are free to hold it up as they click it in, as it will remain at that slow speed until it falls back down.

In some cases, it can be easier to pick the lock by using sound. When pressing up on the tumbler, players will notice a distinct click sound. Depending on the speed of the tumbler, this sound will be either a fast click or a "click-cleek", with the second click sounding far more high-pitched. Keep pushing the tumbler up and only interact with it when you hear that higher-pitched click.

Players can increase their lockpick ability through the Security Skill.

Players can also loot lockpicks from bandits and goblins, but it's easier to purchase them from merchants like Shady Sam.
