The Witchhunter is one of the best Hybrid Starting Classes in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, since it combines melee combat skills with powerful Stealth and Bow abilities, and control over most magic schools, which makes them formidable anti-mages. Versatile, fast, and deadly, the Witchhunter excels where other hybrid classes fail, becoming a Jack of All Trades, but Master of all his combat forms.
Seeking Your Roots Walkthrough In Oblivion Remastered
Want to know how to solve the mystery of the Nirnroots in Oblivion Remastered? Here's how to complete the Seeking Your Roots quest.
It is one of the most popular classes to pick for those who want to experience most of the things that Oblivion Remaster's combat system has to offer, but it also requires quite a bit of skill and strategy before it can be mastered. So, in this guide, players will find all the information they need to become the most powerful Witchhunters in Cyrodiil. From best races to pick, to the best equipment to gear up and hunt the most dangerous deranged mages in Tamriel.
Best Races For Witchhunter In Oblivion Remastered
The Witchhunter is the Class that specializes in combat against mages, so it is basically an anti-mage ranger, with access to spells that allow them to track, hide, and deflect other spells, as well as good training in Destruction spells for more elemental damage. As such, the Witchhunter will need more Magic Resistance to face their designated nemeses in combat. So the best races players can pick for this class are Bretons and Argonians.

Bretons are born with natural resistance to magic effects and affinity for all kinds of magic, so they have some decent bonuses to pair with this class, plus the Dragon Skin Greater Power, which grants a powerful Shield once per day, and can be cast in silence. Bretons have bonuses in Conjuration, Mysticism, Restoration, Alchemy, Alteration, and Illusion, most of them are Major Skills from the Witchhunter, so they are bound to have it easy using various forms of magic to counter their preferred enemies.
Argonians, on the other hand, are 100% Resistant to Poison and 75% resistant to disease, which would make them ideal Vampire Hunters. And since most mid-game, late-game leveled enemies are most certainly vampire mages, this would give players an extra advantage while preventing them from contracting Vampirism. Their ability to breathe underwater and their bonuses in Athletics, Security, Alchemy, Blade, Hand to Hand, and Illusion are big pluses.
Best Birthsigns For Witchhunter In Oblivion Remastered
Witchhunters have various uses for Stealth, Mobility, and Agility, so there are two particular signs that pair nicely with this: the Thief and the Steed.
The Thief grants +10 Attribute bonuses to Agility, Luck, and Speed, which adds mobility, extra damage using the Bow (the Witchhunter's favorite weapon), and a bit little of one of the rarest attributes (Luck) and the only that players cannot upgrade except through enchantments, special items, or picking the Thief. These bonuses will become critical as the player reaches max level, and leveled enemies become troublesome foes.
On the other hand, the Steed grants a +20 bonus to Speed, granting the Witchhunter the ability to move swiftly in battle, dodging spells, the attack of melee minions, and annoying conjured creatures like Clannfear, Bears, and Daedroths, that might ruin their plans to put down Conjurers and Necromancers.

Best Equipment & Weapons For Witchhunter
Since Bows are the primary weapon of the Witchhunter, but they can also benefit from having a melee weapon (especially Blades) prepared just in case, there are plenty of options for players to pick from. Here's a list of some of the best weapon choices for a Witchhunter, considering their stats, utility, and enchantments.
-
Frostwyrm Bow: It can be obtained at the top of the north-east mountains by killing the Uderfrykte Matron, a powerful troll that inhabits the Dive Rock peak.
-
Akavari Sunderblade: Is a powerful one-handed blade (Akaviri Katana) enchanted with a 100% Weapon and Armor Disintegration spell, which renders enemies defenseless in a single hit. It can be purchased in the Imperial City Market District.
-
Chillrend: A unique shortsword with a powerful Frost Damage and Frost Resistance Decrease Enchantment that can be obtained by completing The Killing Fields quest.
For equipment, players should pick elemental resistances for Frost, Shock, and Fire. Rings that increase Endurance, Agility, and Willpower would be great to have as well.
Since the Witchhunter benefits more from having Light Armor, a Glass Armor set is one of the finest additions to this class arsenal, offering both freedom of movement, high resistance, and barely making any noise. If players want to be extra protected, though, they should go for the Crusaders Set, but since this one comes with the Deluxe Edition, not all players have access to it.
Best Spells For Witchhunter
The following is a list of great spells to have while playing Witchhunter, as well as some great ways to use the Class Major Skills to enhance their effectiveness:
- Silence: The best possible magic for the Witchhunter. Cast silence on a spellcaster, and they become sitting ducks, prey for the Witchhunter's arrows. Mages, Conjurers, Witches, and Necromancers are the most annoying enemies in the game. Be smarter than them and shut them down before they can even react.
- Hindering Touch: One of the best ways for Witchhunters to create distance when they are overwhelmed by powerful melee foes (especially Summoned Draemora Lords). Players can use this spell to make their foes slower and run away before letting loose a hail of arrows down upon the summoner (which is always the best way to make the summoned beast disappear). On higher levels, players should replace them with Burdening Touch, and Weight of the World, which are Expert and Master versions of the same spell. More burden means less speed for those pesky Draemora.
- Electric/Heat/Frost Shield: Grants extra elemental resistance buffs to prepare for battle against powerful Destruction spellcasters. In the late game, mage enemies become so troublesome that having no Elemental Resistance is equal to being the easiest target to cook for a spellcaster.
- Guard/Shield: Offer extra protection against melee attackers and Summoned Creatures. Greatly effective against Daedroths and Clannfear, the favorite summons of the average Conjurer.
- Turn/Repulse Undead: One of the worst things about dealing with covens of Conjurers or Vampire Nests as a Witchhunter, is the sheer amount of summoned Skeletons, Headless Zombies, Ravenous Zombies, and other undead that will swarm them once they know the players are there. So, having this spell is a must to control the approaching creatures while they deal with the summoners.
- Summon Flame Atronach: One of the finest Conjuring spells the Witchhunter can have. The Flame Atronach is the ideal battle partner for them, since they are quite resilient, have a deadly fireball attack, and most importantly, they explode when killed. Having a Flame Atronach as their companion will ease the Witchhunters' lives.
- Detect Life: Another useful spell to have, especially when delving in enclosed dark dungeons. Players never know what might lie hidden behind a dungeon wall or in the next Ayleid ruin chamber. Be mindful though: this spell doesn't work on undead or vampires.
- Elemental Spear: A custom spell that causes Frost, Shock, and Fire damages, it has a low Magicka cost, and quite a lot of casting speed. It can be obtained by looting Conjurer enemies here and there, or purchased from Destruction Masters at the Mage's Guild.
- Chameleon/Invisibility: Needless to say, these are some of the most useful spells alongside Detect Life and Nighteye. They can basically turn Witchhunters into ghosts, and mages cannot cast spells on enemies they cannot see. Simple as that.
- Nighteye: Withchunters using this spell become practically unstoppable when attacking covered by the mantle of darkness. They can see where others cannot (except maybe Vampires) and strike first while enemies resort to Light Spells and Torches.

Tips For Playing As A Witchhunter In Oblivion Remastered
The following section contains some useful tips for those players who have never tried a Witchhunter before and want to really know how to get into it. More than simply a hybrid class, the Witchhunter is a specialized and deadly seeker of the occult, who can delve into the darkest corners of Cyrodiil and become the worst nightmare of all supernatural creatures, cultists, and extra-planar foes. Here are some things to keep in mind while playing a Witchhunter:
- Always carry a steady supply of arrows: Since Witchhunters are masterful bow users, their Sneak Attacks are always the opening of a massacre in the middle of an enemy wizard's coven. When attacking with the bow, players are most likely to use the advantage of Stealth, since their class excels at it, but always be mindful of their ammo. Once the combat starts and the arrows and spells fly, there's no knowing when the last projectile will be fired. Better them running out of mana than the players running out of arrows.
- When things get sticky, switch to melee: Witchhunters can also play the role of blademasters against bandits, Skeleton Guardians, and other nefarious creatures whose sole purpose in life is to rush for their sniper roost and try to take them down while their evil wizard overlords fire spells on them. If overwhelmed by a superior melee foe, dodge, or block, then strike swiftly to get out of their reach, then run and switch to the bow to deliver the finishing blow.
- Remember Witchhunters are wizards too: Where both range and melee fail, a good counter spell does the trick. Witchhunters are specialists in using the mage's best weapons against them. Use Silence on Destruction spell users, and they become big, clunky targets, waiting to be filled with arrows.
- Always kill the big bad Wizard first: When dealing with a superior number, especially in dungeons, it is a good idea to pinpoint the most powerful wizard in the coven. They are most likely equipped with Staves (which will be visible in their backs) and they will be well guarded. So, use that sneak attack to crush the boss of the dungeon, then follow with a barrage of arrows and spells to minimize its mobility. Attacking first and fast is a guaranteed path to victory.
- Kill the Conjurer, and the Minion goes poof: In Oblivion Remastered, summoned creatures disappear when the summoner dies. So kill them first, and their minions cease to exist. It is quite simple, and in case these creatures annoy the Witchhunter, using Burden or other debuff spells to control them is the best possible solution to keep them entertained while the player deals with the Conjurer.
