Enchanting is one of the most powerful branches of magic available to players in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered. Endgame gear crafted using enchanting is almost always better than any Unique item obtained via looting.

Unfortunately, not only is the ability to enchant gear not available right from the start, but it’s main form is soft-locked behind a questline, making it inaccessible to players who don’t know to look for it.

How to Enchant Using Enchanting Altars in Oblivion Remastered

Enchanting Altars, or Altars of Enchanting, are special crafting benches in Oblivion Remastered that allow players to add enchantments to an item using Filled Soul Gems. To access an Altar of Enchanting, players will need to become a part of the Mages Guild and progress the questline, gaining recommendations until they reach the level of ‘Apprentice.’ This will unlock access to Enchanting Altars in Guild Halls as well as some other perks. Once you’re at this point, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Interact with an Altar of Enchanting to bring up the enchanting menu.
  2. Select the item you want to enchant under ‘Gear.’
  3. Go to the second tab, ‘Soul Gems, ’ and select a filled Soul Gem you want to use. Bigger Soul Gems give more maximum charges.
  4. Go to the last tab, ‘Effects,’ and choose the enchantment you want.
  5. If prompted, customize the Magnitude (the strength of the effect), the Area of Effect (radius), and the Duration of the enchantment.
  6. Enter a name for the item in the text box at the top and select ‘Confirm’.
  7. Hit ‘Enchant’ at the bottom to finalize the enchantment.

If the enchanted item is a weapon, you will be able to add 2 enchantments, though each enchantment will be individually weaker.

The lightning icon at the bottom left of the enchanting menu refers to the maximum Soul charges, the candle icon in the center corresponds to the total uses before all charges of the enchantment will run out, and the coin icon on the bottom right indicates the gold price for the enchantment.

Only Enchanting Altars can add two enchantments to an item; Sigil Stones cannot.

These enchantments are comprised of spells or spell effects the player character already knows. These spell enchantments can only be applied using an Enchanting Altar if you fulfill the skill requirements for casting it normally.

Where to Find Altar of Enchanting in Oblivion Remastered

There are two ways players can access the Altars of Enchanting in Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered.

The Arcane University (Mages Guild)

The most convenient Altars of Enchanting are located in the Arcane University, southeast of the Imperial City. However, to access these Altars, players will first have to join the Mages Guild and advance their rank to Apprentice. Joining the Mages Guild is easy; simply talk to the leader of any Mages Guild Hall scattered throughout Cyrodiil to become a Mages Guild Associate. To advance to Apprentice, you’ll need to visit all seven Mages Guild Halls in the game and obtain a Recommendation by completing a task. The seven Mages Guild Halls can be found in Anvil, Bravil, Bruma, Cheydinhal, Chorrol, Leyawiin, and Skingrad.

After you’ve gathered all seven Recommendations, you can talk to Raminus Polus at the Arcane University to advance to Apprentice. Now, head to the metal gate to the right of the Arch-Mage’s Lobby and find the Chironasium. Inside, you will find two Altars of Enchanting.

Frostcrag Spire (Player Home)

East of Bruma, at the very top of Gnoll Mountain is a free player home called Frostcrag Spire. Inside, there is an Altar of Enchanting as well as an Altar of Spellcrafting. However, in order to make these Altars functional, you will need to buy a Magetallow Candles Box from Aurelinwae at the Mystic Emporium in the Market District of the Imperial City for 3200+ Gold (the price can be lowered by Haggling). Frostcrag Spire itself is free, but in order to unlock its various functions, buying upgrades from Aurelinwae is required.

How to Enchant Using Sigil Stones in Oblivion Remastered

Sigil Stones are obtained by closing Oblivion Gates, an activity that players will need to participate in to progress the main story. They are divided into five tiers:

  • Tier 1: Descendant
  • Tier 2: Subjacent
  • Tier 3: Latent
  • Tier 4: Ascendant
  • Tier 5: Transcendent

Higher-level Oblivion Gates drop higher tiers of Sigil Stones.

Each Sigil Stone in Oblivion Remastered has two different enchantment effects: one offensive and one defensive. The offensive one is used to enchant a weapon, and the defensive one is used to enchant an armor piece. You can easily see the exact enchantments a Sigil Stone will apply and their magnitude by tabbing over to the second menu in the details screen in your inventory. The top value is for weapons, and the bottom value is for armor.

How to Get Sigil Stones

There are over 30 Sigil Stones in Oblivion Remastered, and the type of Sigil Stone you get as a reward for completing an Oblivion Gate is random (the tier isn’t). To get the exact enchantment you want, save just before you claim the Oblivion Gate rewards. If you get the Sigil Stone you want, great! If not, reload and try again. Rewards are generated randomly each time, making save-scumming strategies possible.

How to Use Sigil Stones

Using Sigil Stones is incredibly simple.

  1. Open your inventory.
  2. Find the Sigil Stone you want to use and click on it.
  3. Click on the Armor/Weapon piece you want to apply the enchantment to.
  4. Choose a name for the item.
  5. Hit 'Enchant.'

This method has the benefit of allowing players to enchant items without having to join the Mages Guild.
