Soul Gems are the backbone of the enchanting system in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, making them one of the most important tools to have in the inventory, especially for players opting for a mage or hybrid mage playstyle.
Knowing where to find Soul Gems, how to use them properly, and how to fill them with trapped souls in order to make them function is crucial information.

Black Souls are souls of sentient creatures (typically humanoids), whereas White Souls are souls of non-sentient creatures like Minotaur Lord, Liches, etc. Both Black and Grand Souls (White) have the same strength.
With the exception of Azura's Star, all Soul Gems are single-use items, which means they will be destroyed once they are used. Since Azura's Star can be infinitely refilled with grand souls, it is an excellent tool for late-game enchanting.
How to Get Soul Gems
There are three main ways of obtaining Soul Gems in Oblivion Remastered:
- Looting Enemies/NPCs: Enemies sometimes carry Soul Gems on their person. Their possessions can be acquired either by looting their dead bodies or through pickpocketing.
- Opening Chests: Containers like chests, sacks, crates, and display cases often hold Soul Gems.
- Buying from Vendors: General Goods merchants and Mage vendors often have 10-15 Soul Gems for sale. However, their stock is not only expensive but also limited. It only refreshes once every 7 days of in-game time.
Loot is leveled in Oblivion Remastered, which includes Soul Gems. This means you'll find Petty or Lesser Soul Gems at lower levels and Greater and Grand Soul Gems at higher levels, though there are exceptions.
You can also use Console Commands to give yourself infinite Soul Gems in Oblivion Remastered.
How to Use Soul Gems
Souls Gems are mainly used to enchant weapons and armor as well as recharge enchanted weapons. This is achieved by capturing the souls of monsters or NPCs found in the game inside an empty Soul Gem.
- To use a Soul Gem to enchant an item, you'll need to use an Altar of Enchanting, which can be unlocked by becoming an Apprentice in the Mage Guild.
- To use a Soul Gem to recharge an enchanted item, simply select the Soul Gem in your inventory, choose the item you want to refill and select Recharge.

Oblivion Remastered tracks your reputation through Fame and Infamy. Here’s how both systems work and how they affect your game.
How to Fill Soul Gems
Souls can be captured in Soul Gems using the
Soul Trap spell, which is a Mysticism spell available at most mage vendors. Casting Soul Trap on an enemy just before killing them makes it so that instead of dissipating into the ether, their soul is sucked into an empty Soul Gem held by the player, provided it has enough space.
Soul Trap can also be added as an enchantment to a weapon, essentially applying Soul Trap's effects with every swing. This is an excellent enchantment for a secondary weapon.
The more powerful a creature, the bigger its soul is. Weak enemy souls can be trapped in Petty Gems, whereas stronger enemy souls require better Soul Gems. Human Souls can only be trapped in a Grand or Black Soul Gem (or Azura's Star).
If, for example, you only have an empty Grand Soul Gem and you capture a Petty Soul, it will fill the Grand Soul Gem with that Soul, rendering it impossible to use for its full potential. However, if you have an empty Petty Soul Gem as well as an empty Grand Soul Gem, the soul will enter the Petty Soul Gem instead. Make sure you are keeping track of what tier empty Soul Gems you have in your inventory and only use Soul Trap on the appropriately powerful enemies.
