The new leveling system has been described as feeling like something between Oblivion's classic, old-school leveling system, and Skyrim's more streamlined, modernized level-up mechanics.

Knowing what to do first in Oblivion Remastered will help players get their footing in Cyrodiil and figure out where to go first.

Consequently, the new leveling system feels like something wholly new, and many players, new and old, are struggling to understand how to level up in Oblivion Remastered. This guide explains how the overhauled leveling system in Oblivion Remastered works and what players need to do to level up with these new mechanics.

Oblivion Remastered Leveling System Overview

Oblivion Remastered Leveling System How To Level Up Levelup Screen

In Oblivion Remastered, leveling is tied to both your Major and Minor skills, and leveling up any Skill will contribute XP to your overall level progress. Major Skills will provide more XP toward leveling up in Oblivion Remastered than Minor Skills.

When you level up, Oblivion Remastered will provide 12 Virtue points to allocate between the seven major Oblivion Attributes: Strength, Intelligence, Willpower, Agility, Speed, Endurance, Personality, and Luck.

You can mix and match Oblivion Remastered Virtue Points however you please, but you cannot allocate more than 5 Virtue Points to a single Attribute. Unlike the original version of Oblivion, the number of points you receive in each chosen Attribute is not determined by the number of times you leveled up associated skills.

How To Level Up In Oblivion Remastered

Leveling up a Major Skill (one of the seven Skills tied to your chosen Class during character creation) will provide a large chunk of XP toward your next character level. Leveling Minor Skills in Oblivion Remastered will provide noticeably less leveling XP, usually less than 1/10 of your level up progression bar.

To level Skills, you must perform actions associated with those skills. To level Security, you must pick locks. To level Blade or Blunt, you must connect attacks against enemies with either of these weapon types. To level Armor skills, you have to get hit while wearing either Armor type. To level Alchemy, you must create Potions and Poisons.

You can also read Skill Books spread throughout Oblivion Remastered to gain free Skill Levels. These contribute to your XP the same way they normally would, based on whether they grant Major or Minor Skill improvements for your character.

If you want to level up faster in Oblivion Remastered, focus on leveling your Major Skills. Because Minor Skills now also contribute to your level, most players will level up significantly faster than they used to in the original version of Oblivion.

Once you have reached the required amount of XP to level up, you will see a notification in the top-left of the screen that reads, "Your (skill) increased. You should rest and meditate on what you've learned." Indeed, to level up, Oblivion Remastered players must find a bed to sleep in. You should also see a bronze icon in the top-right of the screen that looks like a moon encircling an arrow that points upward.

Waiting will not trigger the level-up screen, only sleeping in an owned bed will. Either rent a room in an Inn, purchase a house, or find a bedroll to sleep in.

It doesn't matter how long you sleep. Upon waking up, you will be greeted with the new Oblivion Remastered leveling system and will be able to spend your 12 Attribute points how you see fit.

Once done leveling up, Oblivion Remastered players must click the "Confirm" button at the bottom of the screen to continue with their adventure. If you overlevel by continuing to increase Skills after filling up your level bar, they will roll over and count toward your next level.
