The Epic Games Store's free games page is like a box of chocolates for great cheap games, and has been since 2018 at the very earliest. The way that the Epic Games Store regularly offers all sorts of different genres and experiences weekly is a great way for players to find something new to play, be it for a buffer between their backlog, trying out a new gameplay style, or just because the game was free. The free games promotion is good for bringing attention to indie games and lesser known studios throughout the year.

So far, 2025's been a very peculiar year in regard to the storefront's recent giveaways. Where the Epic Games Store typically gives away something timely for holidays like Valentine's Day, none of those punctual freebies have been seen this year. Some months, like April and possibly October, have been dedicated to live-service bundles as the "second" free game. On top of that, one studio has gotten a lot of attention from Epic Games this year, and that would be developer Amanita Design.

Epic Games Store Free Games: Who Is Amanita Design?

Machinarium

Amanita Design is a Czech game development studio known for puzzle and adventure games that are highly interactive. While Amanita's games are known to have a short run time, players can easily stay in its worlds for hours as practically everything in each game reacts to fans' clicks like the old Humongous Entertainment games of Putt-Putt and Freddi Fish. The studio sits in a strange niche of being obscure to many, but fondly recognized by those who have played Amanita Design games in the past. Many of its games tend to leave players walking away with a smile and a bit more joy in their hearts.

All the Amanita Design Games Given Away on the Epic Games Store in 2025

  • Samorost 2 — September 18–September 25
  • Machinarium — August 28-September 4
  • Botanicula — April 17-April 24
  • Chuchel — April 24-May 1
  • Pilgrims — July 31–August 7
  • Happy Game — May 15–May 22

Come October 17, yet another Amanita Design game will be an EGS freebie, as Samorost 3 will enter the rotation. This title will mark the seventh instance of Amanita Design and Epic Games Store teaming up, and it sees players exploring a stunning 2D world as a charming space gnome in a white outfit. Throughout the game, players will utilize a magic flute to explore, meet unique creatures, and solve puzzles. The game being a "loose" continuation of the first two titles means that newcomers to the series can jump right in and enjoy it, which is a boon since the original Samorost game still hasn't been offered for free to Epic Games Store users. Samorost 3 will be available for free on EGS until October 24.

Amanita Design has made other games than these, like Questionaut and Plachý Trpaslík, but these titles were Flash browser games that weren't preserved, even by Amanita Design itself.

Why Epic Games Store Could Be Wanting to Highlight Amanita Design's Games

While it's very interesting that this one development studio has been an unsung star of the 2025 Epic Games Store free games, there could be a lot of reasons behind the circumstances that gave Amanita Design so much exposure. As mentioned before, Amanita Design's games are quick and easy to pick up and put down, and they tend to capture players with their sheer charm and whimsical interactions. This alone makes the studio's titles great giveaway options, but it also helps after Amanita Design's games were review bombed after it spoke out against the current situation in Ukraine. On top of that, Amanita Design has a brand-new game in development, Phonopolis, that's due out next year. It could be that Epic Games struck an easy deal with Amanita Design that helps get its name out there before its next title is released.

There's Still Plenty of Time For the Amanita Design Giveaway to Complete Itself

The Epic Games Store is still in the middle of one of its more interesting years. As of right now, it looks like October might join April in giving away one full game and one live-service bundle. The first Amanita Design game that was given away for the year, Botanicula, was offered as part of this trend. The remaining three titles could easily be given away in a similar way, and the spaces between the games make it hard to tell if they'll be one after the other or scattered throughout the rest of the year.

Luckily, if players missed out on any of Amanita Design's free games, they can be found on sale on Steam regularly. If fans want to see what the studio's about, then they can either pick up a game at a discount, or wait and see if one of the last remaining games gets added in the future. Even though plenty of games from this one studio have been added to the free games page in the last few months, it's hard to say definitively if the rest will follow. This unpredictability is part of why the Epic Games Store free games have been so special over the last few years, and players should check back regularly to see if Amanita Design gets featured a few more times before the year ends.
