Once again, another Thursday has come and gone, and that means yet another rotation of the Epic Games Store weekly free games. Due to the unique seven-day opportunity to claim full-fledged titles every Thursday at 10 AM CST, it's very important that players regularly visit the store if they don't want to miss out on possible new favorites for their Epic Games Store libraries. The titles they grab are there for keeps, so even if they don't play the free games right away, they're perfect for rainy days or downtime between larger releases. Of course, fans aren't obligated to snag the goodies, but it's hard to argue with the low, low price of free.

Epic Games seems to be aware of the way that the weekly promotion highlights some unexpected titles, as the amount of different genres and experiences the store offers up is one of the things that makes it worthwhile each and every cycle. Sometimes, though, there's a bit of an overlap between rotations, and the week of March 13 may be one of them. Currently, Them's Fightin' Herds is available for free for those who might be entertained by a cartoon arcade fighter. The upcoming free game Mortal Shell is almost the opposite while offering a somewhat similar experience at the same time.

Epic Games Store Free Game Mortal Shell Explained

Mortal Shell is an action RPG that has been described like a first playthrough of Dark Souls by a number of critics. In it, players play as a strange being that has the ability to possess fallen warriors and use their strengths to survive. Mortal Shell features a heavy focus on melee combat, allowing players to use a variety of swords, axes, and more against enemies and bosses that will challenge players' reflexes and tenacity in a way that most Soulslike games do. However, the consensus from players is that Mortal Shell may deliver a similar experience to Dark Souls, but it does so in a way that's uniquely its own.

Despite this, Mortal Shell seems to be hit or miss with players and critics alike. Some loyal fans still want to see a sequel to Mortal Shell someday, which speaks volumes of how distinctive it is as an experience. This makes it a perfect candidate for the Epic Games Store free games promotion, because if players dislike Mortal Shell, they won't pay anything to try it. However, if they enjoy it, they can support the title afterward by purchasing the Rotting Christ or Virtuous Cycle DLC packs.

There's one more Epic Games Store freebie on the page this week, and that's a special bundle for World of Warships. This pack will give players a special Tier IV Japanese cruiser and much more, but it'll be around until March 31. It doesn't necessarily count as a weekly free game despite being in the same section.

The Epic Games Store is Offering Two Action-Packed Second Chances in a Row

Cold Symmetry's title being given away so soon after Them's Fightin' Herds is great for those who enjoy tough combat and action that could be changed with one wrong button press. On the surface, these two games couldn't be any more different, with one being cartoony and colorful with the other focusing on medieval lore and a gritty atmosphere. And yet, what they demand from players is the same in precision and memorization. There's one more similarity between Mortal Shell and Them's Fightin' Herds. Both were originally given away as December mystery games for one day in 2022, and now fans have a longer second chance on both.

Even with the chance to grab these games again, either game won't interest a number of players. Luckily, Mortal Shell certainly isn't the last freebie Epic Games will offer. Those who are waiting for another game to pick up can look forward to finding out what will take Mortal Shell's place when it's cycled in on March 13.
