The year marches on with September, and so does the Epic Games Store with its free games promotion. Every Thursday at 10 AM CT, games are given away at no cost for Epic's users while also revealing what will be rotated in seven days later. In a busy month like September, players are likely looking forward to a few freebies to play in-between releases or to add to their backlog when they're done with the newer games. Even outside of months that see a considerable amount of games launch within it, the Epic Games Store free games offer interesting titles at a steal regularly.
Currently, those looking to strengthen their backlogs with games have a week to claim three free games on the Epic Games Store until September 18. Once what happens to be National Cheeseburger Day rolls around, these games will be replaced with Project Winter and Samorost 2. One title invites friends to either survive together or betray one another, while the other is a sequel to a fondly remembered puzzle adventure game.
The Epic Games Store's Free Games For September 18 Are Completely Different From Each Other
Epic Games Store Free Game Samorost 2 Explained
Having a dog or other pet get lost is an experience that almost everyone has gone through at some point in their lives. In Samorost 2, these feelings take players on a more whimsical course as they control a "space gnome" on the search for his kidnapped puppy. The journey to reunite these two friends is wonderfully illustrated, and the entire game feels like a living, interactive storybook that comes alive with every click. Samorost 2 is a cute little adventure that will take up just over an hour of players' time, which makes it a great title to get for free.
Epic Game Store regulars are likely very familiar with games like Samorost 2 because developer Amanita Design has been featured several times on the Epic Games Store free games page throughout 2025. Pilgrims, Chuchel, Machinarium, and a few others have all been given away at some point during the year. Samorost 2 is a sequel to Amanita Design's most beloved games, so being able to get this game for free is handy for those who enjoy this particular team's work.

Free Games Store Free Game Project Winter Explained
The Epic Games Store is giving away an online multiplayer game at no extra charge, but with a slight catch. Project Winter is about survival, but the team in question has all the tools to betray each other to win the game. It works similarly to Among Us where players take on the roles of Survivors or Traitors and have to act accordingly through each round to win. Project Winter comes with a few added features on top, such as weapons and built-in proximity voice chat. Even with the aspects that set it apart from simpler social deduction games, Project Winter is still very welcoming to beginners.
The chance to get Project Winter for free might make matchmaking easier if groups of friends try out the game together, as some early adopters have lamented that progress in Project Winter can be a chore if a few players decide not to cooperate. That just helps put Project Winter as a great co-op game to play during the weekend.

Due to the tonal difference between Samorost 2 and Project Winter, gamers could be excused for only picking up one of these games once they rotate onto the free games page. That's likely the point of Epic offering them together, making it so players have options that suit their different tastes that week. One of the biggest benefits to the Epic Game Store free games promotion is how many different experiences it highlights regularly, and this upcoming set is a great example of that.
