Summary

  • Deathloop and Ogu and the Secret Forest are free on the Epic Games Store until June 12.
  • Next week's EGS freebie is Two Point Hospital.

Ogu and the Secret Forest and Deathloop are the Epic Games Store's free games for June 5. Epic Games Store users have until June 12 to claim these newly launched freebies.

Deathloop is a 2021 first-person shooter from Dishonored developer Arkane Lyon. Ogu and the Secret Forest is a completely different experience, being a 2D adventure game full of collectibles, puzzles, and quirky characters. While it was originally released in July 2024, Ogu and the Secret Forest only made its way to the Epic Games Store earlier today, June 5. As such, the Epic Games Store is technically giving away a day-one release here.

In terms of critical acclaim and overall brand awareness, Deathloop is the definitive highlight of this newly launched giveaway. Arkane Lyon's FPS holds a "Mighty" rating on OpenCritic, with an 88 average score and an immense 92% reviewer recommendation rate. Many critics praised Deathloop for its balanced roguelike elements, innovative PvP invasions, satisfying ability progression, and extremely creative combat mechanics, among other qualities. The FPS was widely regarded as one of the best PS5 console exclusives in 2021, with its 2022 Xbox Series X/S port receiving similar praise.

While Ogu and the Secret Forest didn't receive much attention from professional critics, it generated decent momentum on PC. According to SteamDB data, Moonlab and Sinkhole Studio's 2D adventure peaked at 1,070 concurrent Steam players shortly following its summer 2024 launch—a decent figure for an indie title that indicates its overall sales are in the tens of thousands. Ogu and the Secret Forest presently holds "Very Positive" reviews on Valve's storefront, based on over 1,500 player impressions.

Ogu and the Secret Forest and Deathloop mark the end of the Epic Games Store's month-long streak of mystery game promotions. Next week's freebie has hence already been announced in the form of Two Point Hospital, a critically acclaimed management sim released in 2020. While Epic’s recent track record suggests the June 12 giveaway may include more than one title, the company has offered two free games per week for over a month, making a change in that pattern likely at some point.
