Epic Games Store Reveals New Free Game for October 23

Fear the Spotlight is the Epic Games Store's free game for October 23. The horror title appears set to break the months-long pattern of the Epic Games Store offering two freebies each week, though additional surprises cannot be fully ruled out at this point.

Between October 9 and 16, Epic was giving away action platformer Gravity Circuit and the Rogue Journeyman Bundle for Albion Online. That pair of offers has now been replaced with two new freebies: Amnesia: The Bunker and Samorost 3.

With the Epic Games Store's October 16 free games now available, the storefront has detailed the contents of its next giveaway, which will center on Fear the Spotlight. The horror game will become available to claim on October 23, just one day following its first anniversary, at 8am PT / 11am ET / 5pm CET. As per usual, EGS users will have exactly seven days to add Fear the Spotlight to their accounts. October 23 will also mark the game's debut on Epic's PC storefront.

What Is Fear the Spotlight?

Fear the Spotlight is a retro-style third-person survival horror about two teens, Vivian and Amy, sneaking into their high school for a seance that goes horribly wrong. Players are tasked with exploration, puzzle-solving, and—true to the game's name—staying away from the spotlight. Fear the Spotlight debuted in 2024 to largely positive reviews, as underlined by its "Strong" rating on OpenCritic, with an average score of 80 and an 87% recommendation rate. It also boasts "Overwhelmingly Positive" reviews on Steam. Despite being a survival horror game, dozens of fans and reviewers alike have described it as a "cozy" experience that's more spooky than terrifying, thus being perfect for newcomers to the genre.

For several months now, the Epic Games Store has maintained a pattern of offering two free titles—or a game paired with an item bundle—each week. Next week’s promotion appears to deviate from that trend, although another freebie could still be announced in the coming days. Such staggered reveals are uncommon but have occurred on occasion.
