Dark Souls 3 Speedrunner Breaks Incredible World Record

Nearly a decade after its release, one Dark Souls 3 speedrunner breaks an incredible record, drawing attention across the gaming community.

FromSoftware's track record with remasters has been pretty great so far, with Dark Souls Remastered faithfully updating the iconic title, and the Demon's Souls remake improving an already fan-favorite game. If Dark Souls 3 is next on the list, there are several changes and updates that need to be included in the remaster to help it deliver the definitive finale to a genre-defining trilogy.

Seamless Co-op

Playing Together Without Issues

FromSoftware is known for its questionable philosophy when it comes to cooperative play in its Soulslike games. Most of the time, the ability to summon other players is rooted in lore and in-world reasons, which can make the actual co-op experience suffer as a result.

Through countless mods over the past decade of Souls titles, players have been implementing seamless co-op into each game, including DS3. To make the remaster feel more well-rounded, having an intuitive and streamlined way to help others would make working together feel more enjoyable and inviting for both new and experienced players.

Uncapped FPS

Better Performance, More Cinematic Fights

One of the biggest complaints that has plagued DS3 and many other FromSoftware games is the caps placed on in-game FPS. The reason for this is that certain systems are designed around 30 or 60 FPS gameplay, meaning that exceeding these limits can actually break the game in unexpected ways.

There are a lot of great Dark Souls 3 mods out there. Here's a look at some of the best mods available for the challenging title.

With a new engine or an updated design philosophy, being able to fight certain enemies like Gael or The Nameless King with an FPS count that matches their grandeur would make the experience significantly more exciting, intense, and visually appealing at the same time.

Hitbox Fixes

No More Random Deaths

In a game as complex as DS3, one of the most important things to get right is the combat. When there are flying dragons breathing fire everywhere and aggressive enemies that strike several times in a short period, having awkward hitboxes can make combat more of a chore than a joy.

By remastering the game, certain attacks and enemies could be tweaked to make their blows line up better with what is actually shown on-screen. Some things, like area attacks and more abstract swings, can be tricky to fix, but any shifts in the right direction would greatly improve the gameplay.

Visual Clutter Improvements

Seeing Things For What They Are

Boss fights and basic enemies need two boxes ticked to make fighting them rewarding and fair: visual clarity and consistency. Sometimes, when taking on a boss in DS3, it can be hard to actually see what on earth is going on, thanks to crazy particle or fabric effects flying all over the place and obscuring the player's view.

Dark Souls 3: Overpowered Builds To Try

Dark Souls 3 players may want to try these powerful builds to smite their enemies into the dust.

Adjusting how certain enemies, like the Dancer of the Boreal Valley, are animated, without changing their overall appearance, could make fighting them feel much fairer and closer to how the battles were intended to play out, where the final emotion is triumph and not frustration or exhaustion.

Boss Rush

Replaying Icons Over And Over

Soul of Cinder Dark Souls 3

A long-requested feature that many Dark Souls fans have been begging for is the ability to replay certain fights or even take on a set of them in sequence, to really test their skills and show off their in-game knowledge in the purest way possible.

Sekiro did implement a boss rush feature in an update, so it is clear that FromSoftware is aware of the concept and capable of creating a fun additional way of battling iconic bosses without replaying the whole game. If this same system were to find its way into the DS3 remaster, then the replay value would skyrocket, and players would finally be able to take on their favorite bosses whenever they choose.

Better Covenants

Connections That Feel Like More Than Just Item Exchanges

The covenants in DS3 leave a lot to be desired. On paper, it's a cool feature that allows players to pledge their allegiance to a specific group that aligns with their values and goals in their current playthrough.

The problem is that the actual rewards for hunting down hidden items and completing obscure quests are rarely worth the hassle. If there were greater incentives to fully embrace certain philosophies, it could transform the game into a more comprehensive RPG that offers more than just cool environments and terrifying enemies.

Better PvP

Testing Your Skills Against The Best

Despite not receiving any real post-launch content aside from DLC packs, Dark Souls 3 still maintains a small but loyal community, and one of the driving forces for that group of people is the ability to battle others and invade worlds to cause chaos and mayhem.

However, similar to the game's co-op, PvP is riddled with issues ranging from lag to problems actually joining another player, making the process more stressful than an actual invader would be. Updating this system with a new PvP mode or a better summon system would allow the community to fight one another for longer and fully enjoy the gritty sword clashes in all their glory.

New Features

Keeping The Experience Interesting And Distinct

Dark Souls 3 ending

Although Dark Souls 3 is currently rumored to be receiving a remaster in some form, that doesn't mean it can't come with a few new features. Games like Oblivion Remastered have demonstrated that revisiting a classic game can mean more than just taking in a visual overhaul. Instead, those games choose to maintain their core DNA while incorporating a few modern features and refining some less effective systems.

DS3 could definitely benefit from a similar treatment that not only updates the graphics but also extends the changes to the gameplay systems themselves. Things like the menus, the inventory screen, and the NPCs all deserve some upgrades, whether it's minor tweaks or full-on overhauls, and all those changes combined could really make the remaster feel special for long-time fans of the series.
