The upcoming Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection will feature a number of characters from Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei and Persona franchises as DLC portraits for the playable characters. Last week, Nintendo held a presentation that showed off various games that will be coming to the Switch in the first half of 2023. The February 2023 Nintendo Direct featured a number of remasters and remakes for some classic games, which included a number of DS games being ported to the system. One of these was the Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection, an HD remaster of the series' DS trilogy. While Atlus is more well-known for the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona franchises, it is also the developer of the Etrian Odyssey games. These are dungeon-crawling JRPGs that utilized the dual screens of the Nintendo DS and 3DS systems. This collection will feature the first three Etrian Odyssey games, where players form a part of adventurers of various classes. Atlus revealed that this collection will feature DLC which stars characters from its various franchises as DLC. In a tweet from Atlus and on its official website, new character portraits were revealed, which are available as both pre-order and post-launch DLC. The DLC can be purchased for $3 USD per pack. These are all characters from both the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series. More specifically, these are portraits of the Demi-Fiend from Shin Megami Tensei 3, Nahobino from Shin Megami Tensei 5, Aigis from Persona 3, Teddie from Persona 4, Joker from Persona 5, and Ringo from Soul Hackers 2.
These character portrait DLCs are essentially costumes for any class that the player wishes to create. For example, Joker can be classified as the Protector class in Etrian Odyssey 1 with this DLC applied. Atlus notes that these costumes can only be accessed in certain games in this remastered trilogy. Joker and Ringo are only available in Etrian Odyssey HD, Demi-Fiend and Teddie are only accessible in Etrian Odyssey 2 HD, with Nahobino and Aigis available in Etrian Odyssey 3 HD.
The DLC should be a fun addition for those who love Atlus' library of games, with many commenting on the dissonance of having characters like Demi-Fiend and Teddie in the same game compressed to Etrian Odyssey's art style. While this collection compiles these three games, it will also be the test bed for future Etrian Odyssey titles. The developers asked for feedback about the trilogy, which can be utilized to help develop games following the trilogy's release.
Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection will be released on June 1st, 2023 for the Nintendo Switch and PC.
