Summary

  • Evil Dead: The Game has been removed from the Epic Games Store and PlayStation Store, causing concern about its future.
  • At the time of writing, the game still appears on Steam and Xbox.
  • Fans fear the asymmetric survival horror may be shut down soon.

A sharp-eyed gamer has recently alerted the horror community to Evil Dead: The Game’s removal from several digital storefronts, which doesn’t bode well for the game’s longevity on any of its existing platforms. Evil Dead: The Game, developed by Saber Madrid and published by Boss Team Games, was first released in 2022 and offered co-op gameplay with PvP combat and four playable survivor classes, including Leaders, Warriors, Hunters, and Supports, against five playable demons, such as the Necromancer and the Plaguebringer.

The asymmetric survival horror game belongs to the movie franchise of the same name, created by Spider-Man director Sam Raimi, serving five films to date, and has become iconic through Bruce Campbell’s protagonist, Ash Williams. Like its cinematic counterpart, Evil Dead: The Game is notorious for its bloodshed, joining some of the goriest games of all time, including Mortal Kombat 1, Manhunt, and The Callisto Protocol.

'I Just Want The Right Circumstances' Evil Dead Star Bruce Campbell Reveals Conditions For Returning To The Franchise

For fans eager to see a more mature Ash Williams make a return to the Evil Dead franchise, there's a pretty high bar to scale before that happens.

Posted on Reddit by ThePatMan117, a PSA was shared on the game’s subreddit, alerting players that it had been removed from the Epic Games Store. The Redditor later updated the post to note the title’s removal from the PlayStation Store as well, which is surprising considering it was well-regarded alongside some of the best horror games on the PlayStation 5. At the time of writing, the game is still appearing on Steam and Xbox. Since Evil Dead: The Game has been removed from two stores, it confirms its initial Epic Games Store disappearance was not a platform-specific error, which has caused loyal players of the game to become increasingly concerned.

Other Redditors immediately shared their fear that Evil Dead: The Game could be shut down for good as early as May, and some noted this potential lack of courtesy would fall in line with the development team’s “track record.” Evil Dead: The Game wasn’t the only asymmetric horror on slasher fans’ radars, as Behaviour Interactive’s Dead by Daylight has been dominating the sub-genre when it comes to popularity for years. Ash vs Evil Dead received a DLC crossover in Dead by Daylight back in 2019, and in light of Evil Dead: The Game’s removal from storefronts, it’s brought a wave of loyal horror fans out of the woodwork to rebel against its potential demise.

The latest installment to grace (or curse) the Evil Dead film franchise is 2023’s Evil Dead Rise, which attracted a resounding cheer from the fan base. Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin revealed sequel ideas not long after the modern entry’s release, which led to the announcement of spin-off Evil Dead Burn that’s slated for a 2026 release window. Cronin will be replaced at the helm by Sébastien Vaniček, with Raimi serving as producer.
