As one of the first base-building automation games, Factorio lives up to the hype its name has created. From a beginner copper miner to an advanced space adventurer, the game lets you go through its arcade graphics with all the automation you could ever desire.

While there is certainly some mathematics involved in the gameplay, Factorio doesn't force the player to do any optimization on their own. No matter what kind of base you have, or how messy your set-up is, as long as it works, why fix it? As a game made for the people, by the people, Factorio lets you change save files all you want.

Where Is The Save File Located in Factorio?

Where Is The Save File Located in Factorio

Like many other games, the save files of Factorio are saved in a hidden folder that cannot be accessed unless you know exactly what to look for. Long gone are the days of save files existing in the Documents folder. App Data is the (relatively) new kid in town.

On a PC running Windows, the save files are located in the AppData folder on your Local Disk (C:). However, this is a hidden folder that cannot be opened without a few extra steps.

  • Press Win + R to open to run command, and type %AppData%\Factorio into the search box. Click okay to open the Factorio folder, which will contain the 'saves' folder. It also contains the 'mods folder.'

Alternatively, you can enable hidden items from the View drop-down menu, located right underneath the navigation bar in your file explorer.

  • Click the View drop-down menu and click Show to open another context menu.
  • Click 'Hidden Items,' located at the end of this menu. This reveals hidden folders to you all around the file explorer.
  • Navigate to C:\Users\[name] and click the grayed-out AppData folder.
  • From there, go into Roaming\Factorio.

Can You Load Different Save Files in Factorio?

Can You Load Different Save Files in Factorio

Now that you know where to find the save files in Factorio, you can transfer different save files between systems, or even import files from other players' games. To do so, you only need to copy the save file you want to import, which will be in a.zip format, and paste it into the 'saves' folder.

Keep in mind that save files from older versions of the game are often not compatible, depending on how old they are. Factorio was in early development for a long time, and it went through many changes, making old saves obsolete.
