Fairy Tail: Strongest S-Class Mages

The power measure for Fairy Tail typically places mages into different classes with the highest being S-class mages. Picking which ones are the best is difficult due to a couple of reasons. Firstly, fans aren’t usually told who is an S-class wizard, and they have to more or less guess for themselves. Secondly, S-class wizards are only so within their guilds. This means that Gajeel, considered S-class in Phantom Lord, isn’t considered the same in Fairy Tail.

Therefore, this list will consider only characters who have been publicly declared as S-class. This means that the likes of Natsu and many others who show great ability but aren’t officially recognized as S-class will not be added to the list.

8 Mystogan

The Mysterious Legend

For the longest time, fans of Fairy Tail only heard of the name Mystogan and never got to meet him. But when spoken about, it was clear that he had attained almost mythological status.

When he did appear, he did show off some extraordinary magic including using sleep magic, which could knock out the whole Fairy Tail guild and also a five-layered magic circle when in battle. It turned out that Mystogan was actually Jellal but from Edolas and is the current king of the land. Unfortunately, this also means he has no innate magic power, which means he can’t really stand against some of the other mages who do have magic power.

7 Bacchus Groh

Bacchus Groh is an S-class mage from the guild Quatro Cerebus. The team pride themselves on being strong and wild, and Bacchus, though typically unserious, is the strongest among them.

6 Kagura Mikazuchi

The Top Dog Of Mermaid Heel

Kagura was first introduced to fans during the Grand Magic Games, where she represented her guild, Mermaid Heel, in a battle against Sabertooth’s Yukino, who is a holder of two golden celestial keys. She defeats Yukino and later is mostly better than Lyon from the Lamia Scale.

Kagura uses gravity magic, but what’s impressive about her is that she doesn’t rely on it and will mostly use her swords which she is very proficient with. She was able to battle Erza to a standstill but eventually lost to the Fairy Tail wizard.

5 Jura Neekis

A Wizarding Saint

Jura Neekis was like a celebrity member of Lamia Scale as he was considered a wizarding saint. Proficient in earth magic, Jura’s fighting ability is impressive, and his placid demeanour makes him a very likeable character.

He is strong enough that he took down Brain, the head of Oracion Seis. However, he wasn’t strong enough to take down Laxus and when up against God Serena along with 3 other wizarding saints, he was absolutely bodied. He would eventually leave Lamia Scale to focus on remaking the Magic Council as its head.

4 Mirajane Strauss

When first introduced in the series, Mirajane was shown as a beautiful lady who was more of an ornament in that she wasn’t able to participate in combat like her peers. But it is also said that she is a fearsome S-class mage with incredible abilities.

When she finally finds her powers again, it is clear that she is no joke as Mirajane can utilize Satan soul, a form of takeover magic that lets her partake in the powers of demons. She is able to use different demonic powers almost like Erza’s requip magic.

3 Laxus Dreyar

Laxus Can Use One Of The Great Fairy Tail Magics

The son of Ivan Dreyar and the grandson of guild master, Makarov, Laxus is someone one could call privileged. But he is no slouch and is immensely powerful, much more than his father, and close to his grandfather.

Laxus cannot only use Lightning Dragon Slayer magic but can also use Fairy Law, one of the great Fairy Tail magics that can only be used by the very strong. Laxus defeated Jura, one of the 10 wizarding saints, and was also able to defeat Wall Eehto using red lightning, which was described as lightning that surpasses lightning.

2 Erza Scarlet

Armour Queen

Erza Scarlet is one of the most compelling characters in the entire series. Saddled with one of the saddest backstories, she uses her unfortunate past as fuel to make her the most powerful woman in Fairy Tail. Erza uses requip magic which enables her to equip different suits of armour with different properties.

1 Gildarts Clive

The Ace Of Fairy Tail

Gildarts is so terrifying that Magnolia had to create a system where the buildings get out of the way so as to make sure they are still standing. He is considered the strongest mage in Fairy Tail and is the father of Cana.

Gildarts is one of the few wizards to face Acnologia and survive, and even Erza says she doesn’t hold a candle to him. In battle, he is accomplished as he defeats Bluenote and is able to take on August (even though he didn’t win). Gildarts is missing an arm, a leg and a part of his body, but is still able to fight impressively. This makes him deserving of the title of Fairy Tail’s strongest S-class.
