The Fall 2024 anime season is looking great, with some big anticipated sequels coming out alongside many brand-new stories. One of those new series comes from a popular manga series that has been gaining traction since 2021, and is going to make the perfect watch for the Halloween season. That anime is the upcoming supernatural anime Dandadan, which will be coming to the screen for the first time this October.

What Can We Expect from Season 1?
Dandadan is based on a manga series by Yukinobu Tatsu, which has been published since April 6th, 2021. At the time of publishing, it had 15 volumes so far. The manga has been published by Shueisha in Japan, and is licensed in English by Viz Media in North America. It is currently being published in Japan in Shōnen Jump+, both on the app and on the website. Less than two years after the manga's premiere, it has already been picked up for an anime by studio Science Saru.
Dandadan is a supernatural thriller anime, but also a romantic comedy, balancing out its darker elements with a fun love story that keeps the plot from becoming too overwhelming. It follows the story of two high school students, Momo Ayase and Ken Takakura (better known as Okarun). Both are interested in the supernatural and the occult, but not in the same way. Momo believes in ghosts, but not aliens, and Okarun is the opposite. The two decide that they will start investigating supernatural hot spots in an attempt to prove that they are right, and the other person is wrong.
When they are investigating, though, Momo ends up being abducted by aliens at an abandoned hospital known for UFOs, and Okarun is possessed by a spirit in a haunted tunnel. The two gain supernatural powers because of their experiences - and an understanding of the other person's beliefs. Okarun and Momo then use their powers to fight against ghosts and aliens alongside their friends and family, all the while falling for one another. Even as they fight against the bad aliens and spirits, they also make unlikely friends with some as well, and learn that there is a lot more to the world than they initially believed.

Who are the Characters in Dandadan?

One of the things that makes Dandadan special is its unique cast of quirky characters - and there are quite a lot of them. Here are some details about the main ones who will make an appearance in Season 1, so you have a little extra knowledge when you start watching this fall.
- Momo Ayase (Shion Wakayama) - Momo is one of the main characters of the anime. She comes from a family of mediums, hence her belief in ghosts. When she is abducted by aliens known as Serpoians, her latent psychic powers are awakened.
- Ken "Okarun" Takakura (Natsuki Hanae) - Okraun earns his nickname from Momo because he shares his real name with the celebrity she has a crush on, and his obsession with the occult, hence "oka." He doesn't believe in ghosts until he is possessed by one named Turbo Granny, which gives him super speed.
- Seiko Ayase (Nana Mizuki) - Seika is Momo's grandmother, and a spirit medium. She gives advice regularly to Momo and Okarun in their struggles against the supernatural, and is able to erect a barrier around her house to keep it a safe space.
- Aira Shiratori (Ayane Sakura) - Aira is a classmate at Momo and Okarun's high school, who is both beautiful and popular. She also has supernatural powers granted to her by a yokai called "Acrobatic Silky," and believes it is her mission to fight against demonic forces. Unfortunately, she thinks that Momo's powers are demonic in nature, and is often trying to fight against her.
- Jin "Jiji" Enjoji (Kaito Ishikawa) - Jiji is Momo's childhood friend, and also her first crush. When his home is haunted by a spirit and his parents hospitalized, he starts to live with Momo and Seiko. His prior relationship with Momo leads to Okarun's jealousy.
Add to this mix of interesting humans a huge cast of spirits, aliens, and yokai (Japanese spirits or monsters), and you have Dandadan. These characters are what give the manga its reputation for being quirky and fun, with plenty of action balanced by light-hearted humor. The manga's popularity both in Japan and abroad is why it is being turned into an anime less than two years after it was first published, and the anime is already heavily anticipated by many fans. Coming out just in time for Halloween with lots of ghosts and ghouls to meet, Dandadan could not be getting a better start as an anime series.
Dandadan will air from October 4th, 2024 on Netflix and Crunchyroll (region dependent).
