Fallout 4: How to Throw Grenades

In Fallout 4, grenades are any weapon that explodes after being thrown. Grenades include items like Fragmentation Grenades, Bottlecap Mines, and Molotov cocktails. You can use grenades to inflict heavy explosive damage against large groups of enemies or heavily armored foes.

While they may be hard to find at the beginning of the game, you can typically obtain them by looting level 10 or higher enemies or scavenging the Commonwealth's explosive boxes. Knowing how to equip and throw grenades is a common query among Vault Dwellers, so they often find their stashes full of unused grenades and other explosive devices. Here's how to throw grenades in Fallout 4.

How to Equip Grenades in Fallout 4

Before you can throw grenades and Molotov cocktails or lay down mines, you must first equip them. When you select a non-equipped weapon, it'll equip it and then de-equip the previous weapon. However, when you equip a throwable like a grenade, it will equip it in addition to your primary weapon, as shown in the picture above. Finally, you can only have one type of grenade/throwable equipped at once. This limitation means you'll need to swap between your throwables by going into your Pip-Boy or using your favorite wheel.

To take this further, you will see the number of grenades remaining in your stack by looking for the grenade icon above the AP meter on your HUD. This icon serves as a quick and easy way to know if you are about to run out of the throwables you currently have equipped. However, the icon will always be a grenade icon, regardless of what type of throwable you have equipped.

Now that you know how to equip grenades and other throwable items, it is time to learn how to throw them. To throw a grenade in Fallout 4, press and hold the appropriate button, aim where you want to throw the grenade, and then release the button to throw it. There is no variable throw distance based on how long you hold the throw button down, and the throwable won't blow up on your face if you hold it for too long.

Here's how to throw grenades in Fallout 4 based on your platform:

PC: Alt key
PlayStation: R1 button
Steam Deck: RB button
Xbox: RB button

After throwing a grenade in Fallout 4, a red grenade icon with an arrow will appear on your screen to show you where the grenade landed. Your grenade can damage you, so it is essential to stay out of the blast radius of your grenade.
