Fallout 4 is a massive RPG by Bethesda that has countless activities for players to do that will keep the fun going for hours in the game. Whether players are joining factions, looking for the best Power Armor, or they are just exploring the game, there's a lot that is offered.

One important aspect of the game is being able to pick locks. This will not only allow players to obtain loot that is otherwise stuck in chests, but it will also allow them to access new areas in the game and get behind doors that are otherwise locked. Here's a guide to lockpicking in Fallout 4.

How To Pick Locks

Fallout 4 - Lockpicking

In order to pick locks, players will first want to enter into the lockpicking menu by interacting with whatever they want to open. The bobby pin can be moved by using the mouse (PC) or the left analog stick (controller). From there, they will want to either use the WASD keys to move the screwdriver around or use the right analog stick to move it around. The bobby pin will work as the lockpick while the screwdriver is used to slowly pry the lock open.

If players find that the lock is resisting, they will want to stop using the screwdriver and reposition the bobby pin. From there, they can try to use the screwdriver again. The further the lock rotates when the screwdriver is used, the closer the player is to the right position. If too much resistance is put on the bobby pin, it will break. Sometimes, players may come across doors or chests that cannot be lockpicked. These are ones that require keys in order to open, meaning there should be a key nearby that can unlock it. If the lockpicking option is in red, that means that the item is owned, and if the player is seen picking the lock, they will be charged with a crime.

How To Increase Lockpicking Skills

Fallout 4 - Locksmith Perk

There are four types of locks: novice, advanced, expert, and master. Each rank of lock requires a different Perk upgrade on the Locksmith Perk, which is found in the Perception line of Perks. (This Perk is also one of the best to pick up early on.) Here's a breakdown of each level:

  • Novice Locks: Can automatically be lockpicked by any character
  • Advanced Locks: Require one Perk level in the Locksmith Perk
  • Expert Locks: Require two Perk levels in the Locksmith Perk
  • Master Locks: Require three Perk levels in the Locksmith Perk

The final level of the Locksmith Perk will allow players to unlock locks without the fear of their bobby pin breaking. This means they will only need one bobby pin and can never run out.

Where To Find Bobby Pins

In order to pick a lock, players must have a bobby pin. These are actually pretty easy to come across and can be found all over the world. Some vendors will sell them, they can be found in different containers, and they can be looted off of bodies. The bobby pin is a pretty common item, so players don't need to be too stressed about finding them.
