The current PTS for Fallout 76 is beginning to test out some of the features that will be coming in the Milepost Zero update, which is expected to be released in September 2024. One such feature that players can currently test and provide feedback on is a new in-game platform for showcasing community CAMPs in Fallout 76, known as Best Builds.
CAMP showcases in Fallout 76 have been a popular topic for a while before the upcoming Best Builds feature was ever announced. However, Fallout 76’s base-building mechanics weren’t always so highly praised, especially when these mechanics were first introduced to the franchise in Fallout 4. Ultimately, the growing appreciation for the Fallout franchise’s base-building mechanics has been a long journey, although the upcoming Best Builds feature for Fallout 76 truly shows how far things have come.
Fallout 4 and Fallout 76’s Base Building Mechanics Have Come a Long Way
The Fallout franchise has changed a lot over the years, especially in the modern Fallout games since Bethesda acquired the franchise, and a lot of these recent changes have been met with heavy criticism from fans who enjoyed the original Fallout games. So naturally, Fallout 4 taking a bold step to introduce base-building mechanics to the franchise was an inevitable controversy waiting to happen.
Aside from the initial skepticism of this new addition to the franchise, the seemingly inconsistent limitations of Fallout 4’s base-building were also a common complaint of this feature. Yet while some of these limitations are still present today, community mods, newly discovered building techniques, DLCs, and overall updates to the franchise’s building mechanics have led to a community following for this feature, with players sharing their creations with others.
Even though Fallout 76 generally uses the same base-building mechanics as Fallout 4, Fallout 76 has one advantage that Fallout 4 doesn’t, which is the online multiplayer element of Fallout 76. Because of this, players can visit each other's CAMPs from a firsthand perspective, which allows for a more personal and interactive experience, so sharing CAMP creations is a popular and growing hobby among Fallout 76’s community.
In the past, there have been community CAMP competitions on Bethesda’s official Discord server, themed around holidays or updates for Fallout 76. Even beyond this, there is an entire Subreddit, R/fallout76settlements, and several content creators dedicated to showcasing community CAMPs and/or advanced CAMP-building techniques in Fallout 76. However, despite the popularity of players sharing their CAMPs and Settlements, there has never been an in-game platform for doing this, but this will soon change with a new feature coming to Fallout 76.
Fallout 76’s Best Builds Feature Will be Right at Home For CAMP Builders
Best Builds is a new feature coming to Fallout 76 in the Milepost Zero update that will allow players to submit their CAMPs so that other players can visit and rate them with in-game likes. Normally, players have to be on the same server to visit another player’s CAMP, but these featured Best Build CAMPs will be available to visit from any server.
This feature is currently available in the PTS for Fallout 76, and it may undergo changes before it gets introduced to the live version of the game.
Considering that CAMP showcases in both Fallout 76 and Settlement showcases in Fallout 4 have become an increasingly popular topic, finally having an in-game platform for showing off some of the community’s best creations has been a long time coming. What was once a divisive addition to Fallout 4 has come to be a welcome part of the recent Fallout games throughout its time in the franchise. Overall, while the growing appreciation for the Fallout franchise’s base-building mechanics has been a long journey, these new features for sharing and rating CAMPs coming to Fallout 76 show just how far things have come, and how this feature will continue to flourish.
