The amount of perk options in Fallout 76 can be overwhelming for new players. During the early game, it can seem like an impossible task choosing which perks are best. While most players will eventually unlock most, if not all, of the perks after a couple of hundred hours of playtime, in the early game, choosing the best perks is crucial for survival and leveling up.
Some perks such as heavy weapon perks and melee perks depend on a player's play style. But there are also a handful of perks that will benefit every new player. From perks that help players to save Caps to ones that increase the amount of XP players get, there are some fantastic perks out there that players should pick up early on.
25 Beginner Tips for Fallout 76
Fallout 76 is significantly different from other games in the series, so players will need to take advantage of these tips to succeed in the game.
10 Traveling Pharmacy
Benefit: All Chem Items Weigh Considerably Less
Traveling Pharmacy can be unlocked at level 3. At the maximum level, this perk reduces the weight of all Chems (Including Stimpacks) by 90%. While this perk isn't particularly useful for veteran players, it can be very helpful for new players.
Upon leaving the Vault, it can be difficult to find Stimpacks and Caps. By reducing the weight of all Chems, players can not only carry more aid items, but they can also sell excess Chems such as Physho and Buffout to merchants for extra caps which can be used to purchase more Stimpacks.
9 Scrapper
Benefit: Obtain More Junk For Scrapping Weapons And Armor
Repairing weapons and armor isn't cheap. New players may find it hard to gather enough components to repair their weapons and armor pieces. Scrapper allows players to salvage more junk when scrapping weapons and armor. The more junk a player has, the better.
Not only is extra junk good for repairing weapons and armor pieces, but it can also be sold in player vendors to make a few extra Caps. Since Caps can be hard to come by early on, earning extra Caps wherever possible helps players progress a little faster.

8 Thru-Hiker
Benefit: Food And Drink Weights Are Reduced
Weight management is very important in Fallout 76, especially during the first fifty or so levels. Food and drink tend to weigh quite a lot. Thru-Hiker reduces the weight of food and drink by up to 90% (max level).
While eating and drinking aren't as important as they used to be in the game, being fully fed and hydrated gives the player a couple of handy bonuses that can help low-level players. Players who are fully fed and hydrated receive the following bonuses:
- +35 HP
- +15% AP Regen
- +50% Disease Resistance
- +1 Strength
7 Bandolier
Benefit: Ballistic Ammo Weight Is Reduced
All ammo weighs something. While a handful of bullets isn't going to weigh anybody down, when players start getting hundreds or thousands of bullets, the weight soon adds up. Bandolier can be unlocked at level 22. The first rank of this perk reduces the weight of all ballistic ammo by 45%. The second rank of this perk reduces the weight by 90%.
Running out of ammo during a firefight is never good. So, by reducing the weight of ammo, players can carry more, which can help to reduce the chances of players being caught without any bullets.
6 Travel Agent
Benefit: Reduces The Cost Of Fast Traveling By 30%
Fast traveling is something that players will need to do very frequently. While there are some free fast travel points dotted throughout the map, most places cost Caps to fast travel too. The further away the player is from the desired fast travel location, the higher the cost.
Fast traveling across the map isn't particularly expensive, due to the frequency that players need to fast travel, the cost soon adds up. This perk isn't necessary for high-level players, but for new players, it is a must-have perk.
5 Lead Belly
Benefit: Take Less Radiation From Food And Drink
Post-war Appalachia is covered in a blanket of radiation. Most food and water sources are irradiated. During the first few hours of playing, most food and drink that players come by will be irradiated to some degree. The Lead Belly perk reduces the amount of radiation players receive from drinking and eating.
This perk is unlockable right out of the Vault. The first level of this perk reduces the amount of radiation players receive from eating and drinking by 30%. The second level reduces it by 60%, and the final level removes all radiation from food and water.

4 Barbarian
Benefit: Every Point Of Strength Adds Damage Resistance To The Player
Barbarian is a strength perk. Most new players will put the first few SPECIAL points into strength. Mainly due to the increased carry capacity that comes with each invested point. Barbarian allows players to make the most out of strength points.
The perk can be unlocked at level 14. Each level of the Barbarian perk gives the player an increased damage resistance, provided the player isn't wearing Power Armor.
3 Action Boy/Girl
Benefit: Action Points Regenerate Faster
Action Points are used in VATS, while jumping, and while sprinting. Early on, most players don't have a lot of Action Points (AP). Action Boy/Girl increases the regeneration speed of Action Points, which is very useful for both low level and high level players.
This perk can be unlocked at level 2. The perk has three levels. Each level gives players a higher AP regeneration speed.
2 Lone Wanderer
Benefit: Take Less Damage And Increased AP Refresh Speed
While being a part of a team is usually the better option, the Lone Wanderer perk is a great choice for those who don't enjoy being in a public team. Lone Wanderer is unlocked at level 4, making it one of the best early perks that players can utilize.
Each level of this perk grants players an increased Action Point refresh speed and a decrease in damage taken.
1 Inspirational
Benefit: Increased XP While On A Team
Inspirational is the top choice when it comes to early-game perks. Leveling up as quickly as possible is important as it allows players to unlock and equip more perks. The Inspirational perk gives players a boost to XP when on a public team. This boost helps players progress through levels up to 15% faster.
The perk is available right out of the Vault, making it one of the most powerful early perks in the game. It can be found under Charisma, and it has three levels to it.
