The Thorn armor is one of the more interesting, non-Power Armor sets for Fallout 76. It definitely caters more towards melee players, though if you're not particularly picky with how it works, you can definitely use it just for the looks alone. However, like many of the unique-looking armor sets in Fallout 76, getting a full Thorn armor set is probably going to take most players a long time. If you're wondering how to get this armor set, or if you're not sure what build to make around it, here's a guide that covers both.
5 Things You Should Do Everyday in Fallout 76
Not sure what to do in Fallout 76? Here are some activities that you can grind for everyday for rewards.
Where to Find the Thorn Armor Set in Fallout 76
Unlike many other armor pieces in the game, the ones for the Thorn set can only be obtained via crafting. You can buy the plans for this armor set from Regs, the secret service agent inside Vault 79. To unlock him as a vendor, you need to finish the Wastelanders questline first.
Regs only accepts Gold Bullions when trading. To get Gold Bullions in Fallout 76, you need to exchange Treasury Notes at any Gold Press Machine (you can find one at the crafting room in the Whitesprings Mall), and to get Treasury Notes, you need to finish public events. There are other ways to get Treasury Notes, but public events are the most reliable source. Plans for each piece of the Thorn armor set costs the following:
- Thorn Armor Chest Piece: 1000
- Thorn Armor Left/Righ Leg/Arm: 750
The Vault 94 Scout Armor Mask is the Thorn set's matching headpiece, and it costs 1650 Gold Bullion. However, you don't need to wear this to get any of the Thorn armor's effects.
Fallout 76 Thorn Armor Overview
The Thorn armor set does three things:
- Melee attackers that hit you will bleed.
- All your melee attacks inflict bleed.
- You are harder to detect while sneaking.
The bleed damage from the armor isn't much, but if you pair it bleed-enhancing perks like Blood Luster, Wound Salter, and Bloody Mess, then you have a recipe for a powerful melee build.
Why Use Blood Luster?
Blood Luster increases the damage dealt by bleed ticks by 35%, but it reduces the overall duration of your bleed effects by 25%. This will harm the total bleed damage you deal from a single application, which may seem bad, but in practice, it doesn't really have that much of an effect. All you need to do to negate the penalty is to hit your target again.
If you're fighting weak melee attackers like Ghouls and small animals, you likely won't even need to hit them more than once. Depending on how much damage your initial hit does, the bleed effect will do the rest of the dirty work for you. Keep in mind that the Thorn armor inflicts bleed with any melee attack, which means you can inflict bleed just with your bare fists.
