As one of the main questlines in Fallout 76, players have the opportunity to join the Brotherhood of Steel. The process isn't exactly simple, and one of the quests players must complete is "Recruitment Blues." While lots of new questlines have been added over the years, Recruitment Blues is a part of the original main storyline. It is one that most players tend to complete fairly soon after leaving Vault 76.

After completing Defiance Has Fallen, the player will automatically begin Recruitment Blues. In this quest, the Vault Dweller must obtain a military ID in order to join the Brotherhood of Steel. It is a bit of a strange quest as it involves lots of admin, but its funny interactions make for an interesting questline. Here's everything you need to know in order to complete it and get one step closer to joining the Brotherhood.

Head To The 3rd Floor Of Fort Defiance

Brotherhood Of Steel Elevator in Fallout 76

After finishing Defiance Has Fallen, the player will know where Fort Defiance is. But for those who don't, Fort Defiance is located on the southern end of the map, close to Watoga. Head inside Fort Defiance and make your way to the third floor. While there is an elevator, the player doesn't yet have permission to use it, so they will have to go the long way around.

While going through the building, the player will encounter Ghouls and Insects, so proceed with caution. To get to the top floor, follow these steps:

  • After entering the building, head through the metal doors on the left.
  • Head straight down the corridor and turn right at the end.
  • There's a collapsed floor. As you enter the room on the right, walk up the collapsed floor to the next level.
  • At the top of the collapsed floor, turn around. There should be a closed door on the left.
  • Walk along the ledge, head through the door, and go right.
  • At the end of the corridor, turn right and go up the metal staircase.
  • At the top of the stairs, head straight down the corridor.

At the end of the corridor, you will see an Overseers Cache on the left. Next to the Cache is the Brotherhood Personal Terminal. Use the terminal and hit Register New Personnel. Unfortunately, it won't work, as the Vault Dweller needs a military ID to register. The player will be prompted to look for clues on how to obtain a military ID.

Leave the terminal, turn left, and head down the corridor. At the end of the corridor, go inside the room on the left and read the note called Squire Evelyn's Journal - Page 16. It is located on the second shelf between two beds.

Camp McClintock

Master Gutsy in Fallout 76

After reading Evelyn's note, the player will be prompted to complete basic training in order to obtain a military ID. To do this, head to Camp McClintok. This place is located right in the middle of the map, just south of Sutton Station.

Once here, check in with Master Sergeant Gutsy, a robot located upstairs in the main building. The robot will berate the player for not wearing a military uniform, and task the player with finding one.

Finding A Military Uniform

To get a uniform, head around the back of the building. On the right, there will be two barracks buildings; go inside the first one and walk to the back of the room. There's a duffle bag on the left, next to a bed. Inside this bag is a Uniform Voucher; take it

Follow the marker back inside and interact with the Uniform Dispenser to receive a uniform and helmet. It's important to wear the military uniform and helmet in order to move on with the quest. Head back to Master Sergeant Gutsy to begin basic training.

Completing Basic Training

Assault Course in Fallout 76

The player will need to complete three training exercises (and an extra one) in order to earn a military ID: a marksmanship test, an agility test, and a patriotism test.

For the marksmanship test, head outside to the northeast side of the building to find a shooting range. Interact with the terminal in the range to begin the test. Shoot all the targets within the time limit to move on.

Next, head south to the agility training area. Interact with the terminal and complete the assault course within the time limit. It is very easy to do; just be sure to hit every marker button. Alternatively, you can use a jetpack to make the whole course a breeze.

The Patriotism test area is located right behind the main building. Inside, interact with the terminal to begin the test. Once the test has started, head into the middle room and activate 'Jimmy' a few times. After a couple of interactions, 'Jimmy' will give the player the password for his terminal. Read through the terminal, then go back to the terminal used to start the patriotism test. Choose "accuse Jimmy."

The Last Test: The Live Fire Test

There's one final test that the player needs to go through to earn a military ID: the combat test. Follow the marker south to the live fire exercise terminal, and use the terminal to begin the test. The player will need to defend themselves against a couple of waves of robots. It's nothing too difficult. After taking them down, go back to Master Sergeant Gutsy and receive a military ID.

Go To The Charleston Capitol Building

Capitol Building in Fallout 76

Once you arrive at the Charleston Capitol Building, go through the door to the Charleston Capitol DMV. Inside, use the a DMV Application Terminal on the left. Select Government ID Application (DMV-AT-12C), and scan Camp McClintock Soldier's Certificate. After that, the screen asks you to give your name. While you can do that, you can also choose from a couple of funny options. The decisions the player makes don't make any difference to the outcome of the quest.

After entering your name, there are a couple of other generic questions to answer. Again, your choices don't really matter. Once that's done, the terminal will print out a form for you to take to the application department.

Turn In The ID Application

Speak to DMV BOT B2 and grab a number from the number printer. Head to the DMV Number Terminal located in the center of the room and hit Boot Up Department B. Once this has been activated, a voice will come on over a tannoy system and start reeling off numbers. The player's number will be Ticket Number C42. As soon as the tannoy system starts, Ghouls will enter the room and attack.

Take out the Ghouls and wait for the system to call C42. Once the number has been called, head back to DMV BOT B2 and hand in the form. The robot will ask the player to show proof of residency.

Acquire A Postmarked Letter

Broken Mail Box in Fallout 76

For proof of residency, you'll need a postmarked letter. To get this, head outside and go west toward the mission marker. There's a fallen mailbox next to a destroyed blue building. Inside this mailbox is junk mail; take it. Be mindful as there are some Scorched enemies around. There are also some Snallygasters, so be sure to bring a good weapon.

Head back to the Charleston Capitol Building and speak to DMV BOT B2. Unfortunately, the robot will say that the address doesn't match the address attached to the 'resident' (the player). To rectify this, get a DMV form from the courthouse. Follow the marker through the building, and take a Blank DMV-AT-21C-V Form from the box in the registrar's room.

Head back to DMV BOT B2, where the robot will tell you to take this to department C. Thankfully, it's in the same place.

Dealing With Department C

DMV C1 BOT in Fallout 76

Speak to DMV BOT C1 to continue with the paperwork. Grab a number from the Number Printer behind the robot and then access the terminal in the middle of the room to boot up department C. Once again, as soon as the numbers start being read out, Ghouls will rush in and attack. Kill the Ghouls and wait for A3 to be called.

Speak to the robot again, who will say that you don't have a valid birth certificate. Use the terminal at the back of the room and look for information about Error Code 34B/1. Once done, go back through the Capitol Building to the governor's office to put an official seal on the form.

Follow the quest marker to the office and use the seal on the table beside the governor's terminal. Then, head back and turn in the form to DMV BOT C1. Use the DMV camera in the middle of the room for your ID image. Once complete, the player will finally receive their military ID card.

Finishing Recruitment Blues

Recruitment Blues Quest Completed in Fallout 76

After all the paperwork, it's time to head back to Fort Defiance and use the terminal on the third floor to join the Brotherhood Of Steel. Follow the route at the first entrance to find the terminal easily. Use the terminal to register a new person. Scan your military ID card, and you will have access to the lift mentioned at the start of this guide.

The lift is right in front of the terminal; use it and go to the fourth floor. Follow the marker and read through Senior Knight Wilson's Terminal entries. Then, the quest is complete. The player will receive some XP, a photo frame, a Field Scribe's Uniform and hat, as well as a few random items.
