Fallout 76’s Recent Balancing Changes Open the Meta For All Kinds of Playstyles to Shine
Bloodied-Unyielding builds used to be able to overlap and double-dip into buildcrafting tools from several unique endgame builds in Fallout 76, stacking together overpowered stat boosts and damage buffs with very little drawback. So, it’s no surprise that these builds were the reigning meta in Fallout 76 for several years, since they could easily outperform any other combination of legendary weapons and legendary armor. As of the new Gone Fission and Season 21 updates, though, this has all changed.
Fallout 76’s Season 21 Update Brings the Bloodied-Unyielding Meta’s Reign to an End
After several balancing changes were introduced across some of the most recent updates for Fallout 76, in the current state of the game, nearly every off-meta weapon type and playstyle has been buffed by now, while Bloodied builds have been nerfed. More specifically, the Bloodied legendary weapon mod that provides increased damage as players’ health gets lower has been buffed, but the additional sources of this buff, like the Adrenal Reaction Mutation and the Nerd Rage Perk Card, have been completely reworked, which is overall a nerf for Bloodied builds.
Unyielding legendary armor that boosts players’ SPECIAL stats as their health gets lower might still be the best choice for players who want to farm XP to speedrun Fallout 76’s Season Pass rewards tracks, but Bloodied-Unyielding builds are no longer the best when it comes to pure damage output. In the new meta, surprisingly, even pistol builds can finally be viable in endgame content in Fallout 76, like nuke-boss fights or the Gleaming Depths raid. Consequently, newer players who are approaching the endgame and longtime players who are adjusting their builds after recent balancing changes should consider experimenting with something new, since practically every kind of build can be more than adequate throughout the endgame.
Fallout 76’s Diverse Meta Is a Rarity Among Modern Games
This new diverse meta in Fallout 76 -- giving players the freedom to choose from nearly any weapon type or playstyle -- ultimately sets it apart from a great many modern games, since several games suffer from having a strict meta that discourages creativity. Unfortunately, some games dig meta holes too deep to recover from, at least without leading to a controversy. For instance, even in the face of all-new buildcrafting tools and a power reset coming in The Edge of Fate expansion for Destiny 2, its existing meta is likely to persist.
Even Fallout 76 fell victim to having a jack-of-all-trades build reign as the undisputed meta for several years. At long last, though, the long reign of Fallout 76’s Bloodied-Unyiedling meta is finally over, and players finally have the freedom to use any kind of weapon throughout the endgame. For now, it seems that Fallout 76 has mastered something that few games have ever been able to achieve.
