Summary

  • Fallout 76 players launch nukes to defeat powerful bosses in the multiplayer game.
  • One player got trapped inside a missile silo during a nuke launch in the post-apocalyptic RPG.
  • The Fallout 76 community found humor in the player's unfortunate death by nuclear incineration.

A Fallout 76 Wastelander found themselves trapped inside the missile silo while a fellow player launched a nuke. The 2018 post-apocalyptic action RPG by Bethesda had a rocky start, due to technical issues, a lack of NPCs, and the scaling down of many of the elements that made the Fallout series so remarkable, among other things. In the years since, the developer has continued to release regular updates, responding to player feedback and improving quality-of-life features. Though it didn’t experience a reputation overhaul on the level of No Man’s Sky, Fallout 76 now has a stable and loyal player base.

Set as it is in a post-nuclear West Virginia, one would think that the game's inhabitants would be leery of setting off atomic missiles. However, almost as soon as players log in for the first time, they begin seeing “Death from Above” alerts, warning of inbound bombs. Fallout 76 players launch nukes to start fights with particularly powerful bosses, like the Ultracite Titan near Nuka-World. And given its multiplayer component, it’s not unusual to run into other players going about the same task or end up their unwitting victim.

Reddit user tommybolts found themselves in an unpleasant predicament when another Fallout 76 player launched a nuclear missile. The Redditor strolled into the silo and jumped around a bit, perhaps just investigating the area. But within seconds of entering the circular chamber, the silo’s door slammed shut, sealing tommybolts inside. Standing approximately two feet from the rocket-powered projectile, the Fallout 76 er got a closer-than-front-row seat as the nuke took off and filled the chamber with flames. The spectacle only lasted for a few seconds, though, as tommybolts was pretty quickly incinerated.

Fallout 76 Players Gets Cooked by a Nuke

Fellow Fallout 76 fans in the Reddit post’s comment section were of course amused by tommybolts unfortunate death. One quipped, “Now you know how Danse felt,” referring to the Brotherhood of Steel Paladin who many people accidentally scorch during the Fallout 4 quest “Call to Arms.” Another commenter wondered if there was a “little bell sound” to notify nearby players that tommybolts was “done cooking.”

For players who are a bit farther away, witnessing a nuclear blast in Fallout 76 is also a memorable experience. One Wastelander shared a video on Reddit that captured the missile flying in and slamming into the ground, as well as the resulting blast wave and mushroom cloud. One impressive part about the animation is that there is a brief pause after impact when it gets very quiet, an actual phenomenon attributed to the distance the sound has to travel before reaching observers, similar to thunder.
