Bethesda Game Studios has released a brand-new January 2025 update for Fallout 76, designed to deploy stability improvements across all platforms and provide even more fixes to the West Virginia region of Appalachia. Fallout 76 was released in 2018 and serves as a prequel to past entries, set in 2102 where players control a Vault 76 resident who ventures outside to re-colonize the open world.

January 21, 2025, was a dark day for Fallout fans, as Fallout 76’s servers were temporarily shut down to address a series of major crashes that had been occurring. Players were previously led to believe that the servers would go dark for maintenance only, but Bethesda discreetly released an update in tandem. The brief server shutdown was designed to fix raid crashes and frequent game-breaking glitches, and for the inconvenience, players have been gifted an update full of fixes.

Since the Fallout show has been such a major contributor to the franchise’s recent success, Fallout 76 would be wise to recognize this.

Posted on Twitter, Bethesda provided a long list of patch notes for Fallout 76’s January update. Some takeaways included a fix for Scorchbeasts’ continuous fire, Mothman is no longer whispering in the Gleaming Depths, and to players’ disappointment, a fix for Super Mutants that dropped more caps than expected. Supplies now display correctly in the Pip-Boy Currencies tab, and a fix allowed Plastiform Blue Star to be built in camp, hopefully distracting Fallout 76 players from building controversial floating camps. The patch also included several fixes and improvements to UI, Perks, Mods, Weapons, Quests, and a string of miscellaneous issues.

Fixes to the Ash Heap region of Appalachia were a bright start to the year, building upon notable changes made in Fallout 76’s December 2024 Gleaming Depths update. However, some gamers expected a Starfield patch first. While the 76 update was generally well received, most called the developer out on the lack of frequent Starfield updates that they felt were previously promised, and a demand for cross-save and cross-play in 76 was also present.

Despite Bethesda's January update proving Fallout 76 is still alive and kicking in 2025, wastelanders are also looking ahead to the next main installment in the Fallout franchise. Todd Howard confirmed the fifth entry will be the next major project for the developer after The Elder Scrolls 6, and players already have a wish list of features they’d like to see in the new chapter, including Fallout fans’ request for a Brotherhood of Steel protagonist.
