Bethesda has recently revealed that Fallout 76 will get a current-gen upgrade early in 2026. With Fallout 76’s release in 2018, and the current console generation starting in 2020, an upgrade was eagerly expected by fans for a while, and the announcement will certainly be exciting for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S owners.
Despite releasing with mixed reviews, Fallout 76 eventually became a successful entry in the series. The goodwill of the player base was gained through many free updates, which have been steadily released over the years. Fallout 76's first major update, Wastelanders, introduced human NPCs, fixing one of the main complaints critics had against Bethesda’s open-world title. Other updates added new areas, such as Atlantic City, as well as more quests and systems.

When Will Fallout 76's PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Upgrade Be Released?

The Fallout 76 current-gen upgrade was announced during the recent Fallout Community Day. Fallout 76 lead producer Bill LaCoste has revealed that a native version of the game for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 would be coming early in 2026. While the producer did not reveal specifics about the upgrade, it’s fair to guess that the new version might run at 60 FPS or more and feature cleaner textures, higher base resolutions, and faster loading times. Console fans have been asking for a current-gen upgrade for Fallout 76 for a while, so this would be an excellent time to return to the game.
Unfortunately, one of the most commonly asked features for Fallout 76 will likely not be present in the upgrade. A few weeks ago, LaCoste revealed that the Fallout 76 team is not working on crossplay. According to him, Fallout 76 is a seven-year-old game, so it would be a “huge technical hurdle” to implement crossplay.
During the Fallout Community Day broadcast, it was also revealed that Fallout 76 will get the Burning Springs expansion on December 2, 2025. The free expansion will add a new area in Ohio, more quests, weapons, a bounty system, and even feature the presence of Walton Goggins’ The Ghoul from the popular Fallout TV show.
Fans will also be glad to know that Bethesda announced Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition during the show. The new edition of the popular post-apocalyptic open-world title will combine the base game, all the official DLC, and over 150 pieces of Creation Club content. The game will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on November 10, and Nintendo Switch 2 sometime in 2026.
