Summary
- Fallout London gains VR mod.
- Fans can enjoy a new perspective of the Fallout universe with VR headsets.
- VR enhances gameplay experience by immersing players in the post-apocalyptic world.
Fallout London lets players explore the world outside of the usual United States setting, and now fans can see it in virtual reality. A secondary mod released for the Fallout London total conversion of Fallout 4 lets players put on their VR headsets and explore the destroyed world around them, and it's available for free.
Fallout London was a massive undertaking that got its start back in 2019 and wouldn't release until 2024. Although there were technical issues on launch, fans excitedly dove into what Fallout London had to offer, with the mod presenting players with the same post-apocalyptic universe they were accustomed to, but seen from a totally different perspective across the pond.
The Case for a Fallout Game Set Entirely Before the Bombs Drop
While Fallout is, by definition, a post-apocalypse game, there could be merit in exploring an earlier part of the series' timeline.
Now, fans who want to explore post-apocalyptic London for themselves can do so like never before, as a new mod makes it compatible with virtual reality headsets. The mod, which has no connection to the Fallout London FOLON team, is in beta at the time of writing, but is already available for download on NexusMods. The developer states that only about 10% of the game's quests have been tested so far, but that there are no known game-breaking bugs remaining, so players should be able to at least explore the environment to their hearts' content. Presumably, any major issues that are found with the mod will be fixed in time. Players can expect to play the game with modern VR headsets that can be connected to a gaming PC, like the Meta Quest 3 or Valve Index.
The Fallout 4 VR Experience
Fallout 4 itself received a virtual reality version that launched back in 2017, though players weren't entirely satisfied with it. Steam lists the game as having mixed reviews overall, whereas Skyrim VR, which launched a year later, sees a mostly positive rating. Despite Skyrim being older than Fallout 4, Bethesda seemingly learned from the mistakes made with Fallout 4's VR conversion. However, the good news is that for fans of Fallout 4, a number of mods have been released by fans that make the VR experience more enjoyable and accessible.
Though VR hasn't quite become mainstream like other gaming systems, many gamers enjoy getting to explore their favorite worlds as though they're all around them, rather than just being shown on a flat screen. VR has the potential to increase tension and fear, especially with horror games like Phasmophobia or Resident Evil 4. Even those who have seen all of Fallout London's monsters, enemies, and dilapidated locations can experience a refreshed and revitalized playthrough by revisiting the game in VR.
