Why Is It So Difficult to Get into Nellis Air Force Base in Fallout: New Vegas?

Fallout New Vegas: map

Nellis Air Force Base is home to a tribe called the Boomers. This district is extremely fortified and the warriors that guard it possess a lot of firearms.

The most problematic thing is the howitzer team that bombards anyone who approaches their territory. Defeating someone well-armed is possible, but not when they use artillery and attack you from a place you can’t reach. So, it is nearly impossible to get into the base using brute force, and you will have to be smart in order to survive the bombardment.

Choose the Right Timing

The first way requires you to encounter a certain NPC. His name is George, and he is a prospector you can find near the entrance to Nellis Air Force Base. He should be to the east of the Fields’ shack location.

George will warn you about the bombardment and offer you a deal. You can pay him 300 Caps, and he will give you the Nellis artillery timing details note. If you manage to survive the bombardment and come back alive, he will give you more Caps. In order to get into Nellis Air Force Base with the help of George’s notes, follow these steps:

  • There is a small town destroyed by bombardment near the base. Some houses still have walls high enough to protect you from shelling.
  • Use these walls as a cover, and the bombardment won’t hit you.
  • Also, you can use Stimpaks and Med-X to increase your chances of survival.
  • After the shelling, the artillery team will stop for a short time, and you can use this moment to move.
  • Go to the northeastern part of the town and hide whenever you hear the sound of howitzer shots.
  • Once you reach the fence of the base, the Boomers will stop bombarding you. After that, you can safely go to the gate as long as you keep your character close to the fence.

A Dangerous Tunnel

Another way to the base requires you to find an old train tunnel. It can be found between the Raul’s Shack and Brotherhood of Steel Safehouse locations. In order to access this tunnel, you will need to pick a very hard lock.

In the tunnel, you will find many ghouls and some Frag mines. Just be careful, and you will be able to deal with all these threats. At the end of the tunnel, you will have to Lockpick another door.

After you come out of the tunnel, go right. If you go this way, you will easily reach the gates of the base.
