Summary

  • Amazon Prime's Fallout TV series boosted the franchise's playtime on Xbox Game Pass by five times.
  • The series has been a major hit, with over 65 million viewers in its first 16 days and multiple Emmy nominations.
  • Fallout 76 reached over one million players in a single day soon after the show's debut, setting a record for the 2018 title.

Microsoft has recently revealed that the Fallout TV series has had a hugely positive impact on the franchise's games, increasing the total playtime of the titles on Xbox Game Pass almost five times more than usual. It was already known that games such as Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 were positively impacted by Amazon Prime’s Fallout debut, but the true scale of this effect was still unknown.

The Fallout TV show debuted back in April and was a major hit, considered both a commercial and critical success. The series had over 65 million viewers in 16 days and was nominated for the Emmy in categories such as Best Drama Series, Best Lead Actor for Walton Goggins, and more. A second season for Fallout has already been confirmed and is likely to arrive early in 2026.

Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella revealed during the company’s Q4 earnings calls (via IGN) that the Fallout TV show increased the total hours of Fallout games played on Xbox Game Pass by nearly five times over the quarter. This includes games previously known to be positively affected by the TV series, such as Fallout 4, 76, and New Vegas, but also PC-only titles such as Fallout 1 and 2. It’s the first time that official information regarding the franchise's play time on Xbox Game Pass has surfaced, as only Microsoft has the official numbers.

Fallout TV Show Boosted Franchise Playtime By Five Times

It was already known that the entire Fallout series had a big player count boost after the TV show’s release. Steam Charts showed that even lesser-known games like Fallout Tactics were positively impacted, with newer games showing even bigger player count increases.

One of the games with the biggest impact was Fallout 76. A few days after the TV show’s debut, Fallout 76 reached over one million players in a single day. This was a very impressive number, especially considering that Fallout 76 was originally released in 2018 and that this period recorded the all-time player record on Steam for the game.

Now, it’s likely that the Fallout craze will diminish, perhaps until Season 2 of the Fallout TV show is released or Bethesda finally announces Fallout 5. Not much is currently known about the next season of the show, with the exception that it may focus more on the city of New Vegas and that it will likely continue the plot started in season one.
