Fantastic Four: First Steps Shows How Marvel Has Pivoted Their MCU Strategy Following Recent Criticisms

The Fantastic Four: First Steps looks like a needed Marvel victory, and it highlights how recent criticisms have forced a pivot in their strategy.

Fantastic Four: First Steps Shares Set Design BTS Clip

In the lead-up to this release, Disney shared a Blu-ray extras clip that The Best War Games can exclusively reveal. The video is an abridged version of a featurette diving into the film's set design, with on-camera insights from production designer Kasra Farahani, set decorator Jille Azis, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps star Vanessa Kirby, who portrays Sue Storm, AKA the Invisible Woman.

Among other things, the BTS clip guides viewers through Reed Richards' lab and the Baxter Building penthouse, unpacking how color, materials, and period cues shaped the team's on-screen world and contributed plenty of details to The Fantastic Four: First Steps. In the case of Mister Fantastic's lab, production decided to break it into three color-coded zones: red for research and inventions, yellow for blackboards and ideation, and blue for comms gear and mission control. The palette doubles as visual wayfinding, making the lab easily readable at a glance during busy ensemble scenes, thus contributing to the movie's accessibility, which is a number one priority for all modern additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Baxter Building penthouse seen in the film channels mid-century California, with clean lines, warm woods, and indoor-outdoor flow, all reframed through the film's space-age optimism. In one of the scenes, Vanessy Kirby highlights the "kitchen of the future," complete with a revolving fridge and shelves stocked with era-appropriate American brands, a domestic counterpoint to the movie's cosmic stakes. All of them contribute to The Fantastic Four: First Steps' retro-futuristic setting that serves as the film's defining trait.

Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be available on digital platforms on September 23 and on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on October 14. The disc release will include a plethora of bonus content, including commentary from director Matt Shakman.
