After you unlock the ability to change Lives during chapter 1 of Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, you can start accepting side quests in the capital and Eternia Village. Some side quests call for a specific Life, so you'll want to unlock the Gathering Lives if you haven't already.
"A Woodcutter Needs an Axe" is an early quest that requires you to deliver an Oak Axe. There are different ways of obtaining an Oak Axe, but the one you'll need for this Fantasy Life i side quest requires the help of your Crafting Lives.

How to Get a Good Quality Oak Axe
Understanding How Crafting Works
You're going to need the Carpenter Life to make an Oak Axe. You should also get the Woodcutter and Miner Life so you can farm the required materials rather than having to purchase them. Finally, you might need the Blacksmith Life to forge the necessary materials for the Oak Axe.
If you're creating an Oak Axe of Ordinary rank instead of Fine rank, then you won't need the Bronze Ingot.
When you complete the "Fledgling Carpenter Skills" quest, you'll be given an Oak Saw. While it's possible to craft lower-leveled tools with this, you should consider crafting a new Oak Saw of better ranking and (if possible) quality. If you want to skip the crafting, you should buy an Oak Saw from the Luxurious Store in the capital.
To make an Ordinary Oak Axe, you need x3 Oak Lumber. If you want to make a Fine Oke Axe, you'll need x3 Oak Lumber and x2 Ingot. Again, you can buy these materials from the goods store and blacksmith's, but if you're saving your Dosh, you should just get the Woodcutter, Miner, and Blacksmith Lives.
Each crafting recipe has a recommended skill level. For example, the Fine Oak Axe has a recommended carpenter level of 140. Although it's classified as a Lv 1 Carpenter Recipe, you're going to want to make sure your Carpenter Life skill is near that 140. This is why it's recommended you get a stronger crafting tool, in this case, the Oak Saw.
Crafting Minigame Tips
During the crafting minigame, you want to try and get Great and Excellent as much as possible. This means you'll have to be quick and accurate. You'll need to press the action button when prompted at the appropriate stations. You're also timed, so don't take too long.
The timer above your character will also label the stations for that 'round'. For example, you may see two images of the icon saw followed by the hammer icon. Generally, it may be easier to just look at your character and move them to the station when the button prompt appears.
When you complete the game, you can either get a Failure, Done, Good Job, or Great Job. When crafting weapons/tools/armor, you want to try to go for the Good Job or Great Job ranking. If you made Excellent and Great marks during the minigame, then you'll likely get a Good quality tool.

Where to Find Wurke
After you're tasked with collecting 10000 Dosh for Auntie Ann, you'll find quest bubbles over some of the NPCs in Eternia Village and the capital. If you look by the fountain outside the Guild Hall, there's a man named Wurke. Speak to him to get the "A Woodcutter Needs an Axe" side quest.
As the name implies, you need to give Wurke an Oak Axe. However, he'll refuse the tool if it lacks a Good or Great quality mark. This means you won't be able to buy the Oak Axe from the market.
With the Carpenter Life, you can start making the Oak Axe as long as you have all the materials. Don't worry about whether it's Ordinary or Fine rank when choosing from your recipe list. You just need to make sure you complete the minigame quickly and accurately enough to get an Oak Axe of Good Quality.
If you're getting Excellent and Great marks during the miningame but still can't seem to get the Good quality Oak Axe, then your Carpenter's tool (ie: the Saw) may have a low skill level. You can either raise your Carpenter level through the Skills menu, or you can craft a Fine Saw to ensure its level matches the Oak Axe you are trying to make.
Once you have the right Oak Axe, deliver it to Wurke. As a reward, you'll get 400 Dosh and the crafting recipe for the Bountiful Harvest Box.
Sometimes a high-quality weapon will also receive a randomized skill, such as Woodcutting+. While Wurke needs Good/Great quality Oak Axe, you should avoid giving him an Oak Axe if it has a skill on it. A Woodcutting+ effect on an Axe is not worth 400 Dosh and a crafting recipe. Always check your tools before you turn them in.
