Summary

  • Far Cry 7 may feature a plot involving rescuing family members from a cult, resembling Far Cry 5.
  • The game could reprise FC5's resistance meter, iterating on and advancing its gameplay dynamics and narrative structure.
  • Speculation suggests Far Cry 7 might include an in-game timer to shape player actions and story progression, which could also tie into the use of a resistance meter mechanic like FC5's.

Far Cry has been in something of a holding pattern since the release of the latest mainline title in 2021. Developer Ubisoft had previously released titles in its staple FPS open-world franchise on a near-clockwork schedule, but since the sixth installment, this has not been the case. Far Cry fans have thus had little word for years on the next project in the series, and although it is widely assumed Far Cry 7 will eventually see the light of day, the lingering silence has left many wondering what exactly could be in store for it next.

With nothing official regarding its plans coming from the studio, Far Cry 7 has been cloaked in rumors and leaks since, providing some vague directions as to how Ubisoft may be looking to reinvent it for the next release. One of these that has continually made the rounds is that Far Cry 7 will possibly see players rescue family members from a mysterious cult-like group. This idea will likely remind fans of the Project at Eden's Gate sect and leader Joseph Seeds' family of religious villains seen in Far Cry 5. And if this direction has legitimate legs, the next title could pull from another feature that FC5 introduced that might fit well into this vision.

The rumors about Far Cry 7's story and possible antagonist originated from an Insider Gaming report from September 2023.

Far Cry 7 Could Make Great Use of FC5's Resistance Meter If Rumors About its Villains Are True

Far Cry 5's Resistance Meter Mechanic Was a Notable New Inclusion For the Series

In the fifth entry, Ubisoft attempted to shake off some of the dust that the series had been accumulating through the course of the previous few outings. In addition to Far Cry 5's subversion of standards like radio towers, the resistance meter was one of the more memorable ways that it aimed to change up the established formula and try something fresh while keeping other familiar elements intact.

As players retook territory back from Eden's Gate throughout Hope County, this meter would slowly build, and when filled, would advance the plot via a confrontation with the controlling Seed family member of each subsection of the map. While not every fan was enamored with this design, it did make a lot of narrative sense in context, and at least showed that the studio was willing to experiment with Far Cry.

How Far Cry 7 Could Reprise FC5's Resistance Meter

Allegedly, Far Cry 7 will see players confronting an organization known as Sons of Truth, a militant cult or adjacent group, which has apparently kidnapped members of the main character's family. Assuming that this information is accurate to any degree, it points to another collection of villains like FC5, where major antagonist figures could be in charge of a given operation or holding a specific family member hostage in their area of the world. This setup would seem to naturally invite a version of Far Cry 5's resistance meter being built into its core loops. Players might have to achieve certain tasks via disrupting the Sons of Truth in various ways, culminating in bigger story moments of taking each leader down and reuniting with the family members.

Another consideration that might lend an interesting twist to a resistance meter-like mechanic is the rumor that Far Cry 7 will include an in-game timer. While again unconfirmed, this has already proven divisive, given the usual freeform design of FC games. However, it might be integrated in such a way that performing a range of goals would decrease this possible timer via a bar that measures and shifts in relation to players' actions, acting as a sort of mirror to the base idea of FC5's resistance meter. Once a threshold has been reached, the story would react accordingly, and fans might then have to move on to the next area and engage in the process again. While it remains to be seen if, and how, these items will manifest in Far Cry 7, based on speculation so far, it could still provide a good way to incorporate and iterate on this aspect of FC5.
