Far Cry Primal is one of the best entries in the open-world action series. The mechanics will be instantly familiar to fans of this series, but the prehistorical setting of 10,000 BC somehow makes it feel like it's one of the most original entries.
Taking players to a different time and adding elements of magic and mysticism gives Far Cry Primal a fantasy element missing from the mainline series. One of these mystical elements is the protagonist Takkar's destiny of becoming The Beast Master, which may or may not reference the cult 80s sword and sorcery film of the same name. But it does grant the character the same powers of communicating and controlling wild beasts. This guide will take players through taming animals and becoming The Beastmaster.
The Quests To Complete Before Taming Animals In Far Cry Primal
Visit Tensay The Shaman
After completing the prologue and setting up a camp with Sayla, she recommends Takkar visit the mystical shaman named Tensay. While it's tempting to wander off the beaten path and explore the prehistorical world, it's better to go there and talk to him straight away, as it will give Takkar the power to tame animals in Far Cry Primal.
- Tensay's location will be marked on the map.
- On the way, Takkar will also encounter the first campfire to unlock. So be sure to activate that and create a Fast Travel point first.
- There will be enemy Udam in the area, so use stealth to take them out and head straight for the shaman.
- Takkar will find himself outside a cave. Head inside to trigger the next quest.
Vision Of Beasts
- Inside the cave, the shaman will say he was expecting a chosen warrior and begin performing a ritual.
- Takkar will drink from a skull and begin a hallucination, finding himself in a land of beasts.
- Approach the owl to start a flying mission. This part of the mission can be tricky as Takkar needs to keep up with the bird. Just remember that up means down, and down means up.
- After completing the hallucination, Takkar will gain control of the bird, and it will function like the eagles or ravens in the Assassin's Creed series. It's used for marking enemies, finding new waypoints, and locating rare animals to tame.
Taming The White Wolf
Beast Master Quest
- Head to the location on the map and trigger the Beast Master quest.
- After discovering the body of a mutilated wolf, press the up button on the D-pad to activate the owl and tag the Udam enemies.
- Locate and then defeat the Udam hunters. Then use Takkar's Hunter Vision to track their footsteps to the lair of the White Wolf.
- The tracks will eventually lead Takkar to the Den of Walkwa. The white wolf is located in the far right corner.
- Approach it slowly from the rear by crouching. Hold down L1/LB, craft some bait in the weapons wheel, and throw it with the R1/RB button.
- Approach the wolf when eating and hold down the Square/X button to tame it.
- With the white wolf tamed, it can be directed to attack and kill Takkar's enemies on command.
- The final step is to use the wolf to kill an enemy tribesman. Follow the mark on the map to find the Udam warrior near a stream. Order the wolf to attack by holding down the L2/LT button aim and press R1 to attack.
- With the Udam warrior down, this completes the Beast Master Quest and opens the ability to tame wild beasts in Far Cry Primal.
Far Cry Primal is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
