Wordle is back with yet another new word today. This one is a bit of a challenge, and some players may be in search of a few hints to the answer, some help with the rules, or even a little strategy for winning all on their own.

How To Play Wordle

Created by an indie dev about a year and a half ago, Wordle was purchased by the newspaper giant the New York Times. The one this article is all about and the original version is still hosted on their Games website; it can only be played by heading to the newspaper's Games website or the NYT Crossword app. Other Wordle clones and copycats will have different answers than what is listed here, and some of them even have slightly different rules of how to play. For example, the Wordle clone Brandle only has brand names as possible answers.

  • To play, choose a starting five-letter word that is a real English word. It cannot be a slur or an offensive word, cannot be a proper noun, and should contain a variety of letters. Players should also avoid previous answers and plural nouns ending in S.
  • Type the starting Wordle word into the site.
  • Press enter; this will cause its letters to change colors.
  • Each color has a meaning: green are right, gray are wrong, and yellow letters are correct but in the wrong position in the word.
  • Pick and new word that has all the yellow and green letters from the clues above.
  • Type it into the site; its letters will also change colors.
  • Continue until the answer is guessed or players run out of their six total guesses.
  • Words are daily, and they reset at midnight local time.
