Where To Buy A Shovel
The easiest and quickest way to get a shovel in Fields of Mistria is to buy one. You can buy a Worn Shovel from the General Store for 500 Tesserae, as pictured and located on the map below:
Alternatively, you could also save your money for a Copper Shovel that's purchasable from the Blacksmith Shop for 1,000 Tesserae. The Copper Shovel can be charged to dig eight tiles in a row, making it more efficient compared to the Worn Shovel.
Either way, this means you need to spend a bit of time making money in Fields of Mistria before you can buy a shovel, which you can do by completing requests on the town request board and selling items in your Shipping Bin. While you might be tempted by other purchases, it's beneficial to ensure you've got all the basic tools in Fields of Mistria beforehand, so you can get going and progress with the game's core activities like farming.
Craft A Shovel
Alternatively, there is also the option to craft a shovel in Fields of Mistria at the Tools Station outside the town Blacksmith. However, this can take longer as you will need resources like Copper Ore and a higher Smithing level. There are three shovel upgrades in Fields of Mistria currently, which include a Copper Shovel, Iron Shovel, and Silver Shovel.
It's generally a good idea to buy the Worm Shovel first and wait to upgrade it for a better one once you've unlocked the Mines to gain access to more resources.

What Is A Shovel Used For In Fields Of Mistria?
One of the main purposes of using a shovel in Fields of Mistria is to expand your farm plot by digging up grass, giving you more space to grow crops like flowers and vegetables, as you get more experienced and skilled at farming. You can also use the shovel to destroy crops you no longer want. However, you can also use a shovel to unearth dig spots that look like small mounds of earth in certain parts of the map to get materials like Peat and Sod, making it invaluable for quests like 'A Request for Gardening Materials'. You will need to search the map carefully as you explore for these round marks on the grass where you can use your shovel to dig, as pictured below.
You can also use the shovel in Fields of Mistria to find buried Unidentified Artifacts in small mounds of earth, such as the Alda Feather Pendant, an uncommon artifact used in marriage proposals. If you don't have a shovel yet, you can also use a pickaxe to unearth these kinds of dig spots.
