The rumor mill is getting going online as fans have begun to speculate about a potential Final Fantasy 13 remake following a response from developer Square Enix to a Twitter comment teasing the game. While the reply is far from an official reveal, it was enough for Final Fantasy 13 fans to latch on to with hope that maybe the company is thinking of bringing back the title with a full-on remake.
Final Fantasy 13 is one of the most divisive games in the series, as many fans criticized the game's much more linear world design compared to previous entries, as well as the massively overhauled combat system. Still, the game sold well and saw a devoted fanbase begin to form when it first launched in 2009, sparking two sequels and giving Final Fantasy its first-ever full-on trilogy.
Now, 15 years after the original Final Fantasy 13 launched, Square Enix has teased fans about a potential remake as it responded to a fan asking about a re-release of the trilogy by asking why they'd want that instead of a remake. The tweet naturally set the Final Fantasy community ablaze on the website, as the fanbase at large has been hopeful for years about the possibility of the games making a return on modern hardware.
Square Enix Tweet Sparks Hope for Final Fantasy 13 Fans
Of course, Square Enix's response to the fan is nothing official and was mostly conversational, as it spawned from a post asking for fans' "hot takes" about the series, in which a user responded with their desire to see the games get official remasters. Given recent rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake and the continued fan support for a potential remaster of FF13, however, the context did little to sway the hopes of fans wanting to see the games return.
Some fans were skeptical about the idea of a remake, as well, though, with many wanting Final Fantasy 13 to simply get a modern re-release with a few tweaks to gameplay and graphics instead. Others were seemingly disillusioned at the fact that Square Enix's response was purely hypothetical and took it with a grain of salt, as it was not exactly an official announcement.
Still, Square Enix has found recent success with the Final Fantasy 7 remake titles, as the third entry is currently in development along with a slew of other projects on the way. It is still unclear what the future may hold for Final Fantasy 13, but in the meantime, the original three games are still available on Steam and Xbox Series X/S via backwards compatibility for those looking to check them out.
