According to Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki Yoshida, recent discussions with Nintendo regarding a potential Switch 2 port of the MMO have been 'positive.' Rumors that Final Fantasy 14, along with other Final Fantasy titles, would make their way to the Nintendo Switch 2 have swirled even before the console was released in June, and fans of the franchise may have plenty to look forward to in the future.

Since its major reboot was released in 2013, Final Fantasy 14 has continued to dominate much of the MMO market, winning countless awards for its many expansions and becoming a major moneymaker for Square Enix in the years following. Earlier this month, Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.3 brought Dawntrail's main story to a close, prompting the community to begin speculating what the developer is preparing for the next major update in the years to come. While the title is available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, those enjoying Nintendo's newest hardware may have a chance to visit Eorzea in the near future, according to new reports.

Final Fantasy 14 Producer Says Square Enix Has Had ‘Positive Discussions’ With Nintendo Over Future Switch 2 Port

In a new chat with VGC at Gamescom, Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki Yoshida stated that Nintendo Switch 2 players may be getting some "good news" in the future. "We are putting in our best efforts to ensure that this happens," Yoshida said, while also mentioning the possibility of Final Fantasy 16 coming to the Switch 2 as well. “For me, it’s just my aim to provide Final Fantasy 14 and 16 to as many players as possible, so I hope players will look forward to possibilities in the future. But I just ask for a little bit more time." When discussing the benefits of launching Final Fantasy 14 on the Switch 2, Yoshida noted that players could be able to do more complex and demanding content on their PC, but they could also "relax on the sofa with the Switch 2 in hand, and they could do their gatherer and crafter content." The beloved game dev noted that players picking up FF14 on the Switch may have never played an MMO before, and he's excited for more users to become interested in the genre.

Unfortunately, Final Fantasy 14 has seen a downturn in both players and profits, with the Dawntrail expansion continuing to be divisive among the playerbase. However, many in the community aren't worried about the current trend, as it's common for an MMO to see a drop in players between major patches. Additionally, Dawntrail marked the beginning of an entirely new arc in the game's story, meaning that the title needs time to craft its new narrative to meet player standards after the wildly popular Endwalker expansion launched in late 2021.

During Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 19, an upcoming Final Fantasy 14 and Monster Hunter Wilds crossover was announced. Set to kick off in early October, Monster Hunter Wilds players will face off against a new beast and find iconic creatures from the Final Fantasy franchise, including Chocobo and Cactuar. In the meantime, Final Fantasy 14 players who have reached level 100 and completed the "Dawntrail" main scenario quest will face off against Guardian Arkveld.
