Summary

  • Get ready for changes in payment methods for Final Fantasy 14 starting June 25, including sales tax on subscriptions and digital purchases.
  • Players in certain US states may be exempt from the sales tax increase, depending on state laws around taxing digital goods.
  • Make sure to update your account information to avoid any errors or incorrect charges during this transition period.

Square Enix stated that Final Fantasy 14 will soon undergo another payment change, as all subscriptions and digital purchases made on the Mog Station and Online Store will be subject to state or local sales tax in parts of the US that collect it. This change to purchases made for Final Fantasy 14 will take effect on June 25, just three days before Dawntrail enters early access.

The announcement came weeks after Final Fantasy 14 players reported some payment issues following a change made in late April 2024 to the payment processor used by Square Enix. According to players, the affected payment methods included Visa Credit and debit cards, Discover credit cards, and Mastercard credit cards from Capital One. Though Square Enix has since acknowledged the payment issue, players who use any affected credit or debit cards may still see error codes when trying to make purchases on the Mog Station or update their account information. However, players confirmed that other methods such as Amazon Pay and PayPal will work until the ongoing payment issues are resolved.

While the payment issues with Final Fantasy 14 are ongoing, some players will soon see their subscription feeds get a price increase. According to Square Enix, Final Fantasy 14 subscriptions and related purchases of digital goods, such as Fantasia potions, will be subject to state or local sales tax in places throughout the US that collect tax on them. This change will go into effect on Tuesday, June 25. Sales tax will also apply to the Crysta currency used to fund Final Fantasy 14 subscriptions and will match the fees already in place on platforms such as Steam and Xbox. Some players who live in states such as California, which has tax exemption laws for digital goods, or states like Oregon which do not collect sales tax, will not see their subscriptions change.

Final Fantasy 14 Players Will Soon Be Charged Sales Tax

  • Final Fantasy 14 players who live in states that collect sales tax on digital goods will see a price increase.
  • The tax rates will vary depending on the player's location.
  • Players in states such as California and Oregon will be exempt from the change.
  • The change goes into effect on June 25.

The changes will take hold three days before Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail launches in early access. Any purchases made for Final Fantasy 14 following June 25 will include the estimated sales tax based on the buyer's address when a purchase is made. Square Enix then requested players to confirm any relevant account information to avoid any incorrect charges that could occur afterward.

Between the upcoming changes to payments and the new Final Fantasy 14 free login campaign, the news cycle continues to give players plenty to chew on. How smoothly the implementation of sales tax will go remains to be seen.
