Final Fantasy 16 could make the jump to other platforms once it launches on PC, at least according to some of the game’s developers. The latest mainline Final Fantasy game launched exclusively on the PlayStation 5 last June, but Square Enix has promised a PC port at a later date. So far, there is no official word on when the PC version of Final Fantasy 16 will be released, but producer Naoki Yoshida recently told fans that it is in the end stages of development and a playable demo should be forthcoming.
With Final Fantasy 16’s long-awaited PC port supposedly nearing release, the question on many fans’ minds is if the game will eventually launch on another platform like the Xbox Series X or Nintendo Switch. Much of the surrounding discussion has been centered around the former, with a rumor suggesting that Final Fantasy 16 could make the jump to Xbox earlier this year. However, Square Enix’s confirmation that the next Final Fantasy 7 Remake sequel will be exclusive to PlayStation for the time being has some casting doubt on FF 16 being released on Xbox hardware anytime soon.
However, a recent statement from Naoki Yoshida suggests that this might not be the case after all. He and Final Fantasy 16 DLC director Takeo Kujiraoka spoke with NoisyPixel during this weekend’s PAX East 2024 event in Boston, where they discussed both the base game and the upcoming The Rising Tide expansion. When asked if it will be difficult to say goodbye to the FF 16 storyline and characters following The Rising Tide’s release in April, Yoshida noted that his team still has the PC version to work on, and they are “thinking about hopefully moving to other platforms.
Naoki Yoshida Hopes to Bring Final Fantasy 16 to Other Platforms
Naoki Yoshida didn’t get into any specifics when talking about Final Fantasy 16 being brought to other platforms, and it should be kept in mind that he said his team is merely thinking about making this a reality someday. Final Fantasy 16 might ultimately remain exclusive to PS5 and PC, but Xbox higher-ups like Phil Spencer have expressed interest in adding recent Final Fantasy titles to the Xbox Series X/S library and Xbox Game Pass.
In the meantime, fans who already have access to Final Fantasy 16 have much to look forward to with the upcoming The Rising Tide DLC, which will take Clive and his party to the realm of Mysidia for a battle against the legendary Leviathan. Final Fantasy 16 is also getting another update patch on April 18, which will add new features like an enhanced user interface and customizable button layouts.
