Some of the developers at Square Enix want to remake Final Fantasy 6 on modern hardware. Released for the Super NES in 1994, Final Fantasy 6 was the last traditional 2D entry in the mainline Final Fantasy series and is noted by fans for eschewing the franchise’s then-customary medieval settings in favor of a steampunk world inspired by the Second Industrial Revolution. Final Fantasy 6’s deep and mature plot is also well regarded, and many of the game’s characters have become fan favorites - including the young heroine Terra Brandford and the maniacal clown sorcerer Kefka Palazzo. Both Terra and Kefka have gone on to represent Final Fantasy 6 in the Dissidia Final Fantasy series of fighting game spin-offs, and the original game has been ported to modern systems like PC and the Nintendo Switch over the years. Final Fantasy 6 was one of the many classic Final Fantasy entries to be updated in the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection, but many players have been wishing for a full-blown remake in the style of the recent Final Fantasy 7 Remake series.RELATED: Leaker Claims Final Fantasy 10 Remake is on the Way They might not be the only ones who want this either, as one of the Final Fantasy series’ biggest names recently expressed a desire to remake Final Fantasy 6 during a roundtable interview on YouTube (as translated by Twitter user Genki_JPN). At one point, Square Enix Vice President and Final Fantasy 7 Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase mentioned how his development team would regularly ask him about a Final Fantasy 6 remake. He notes that this project would be difficult, but acknowledges that many within Square Enix would like to see it happen.

As mentioned before, Final Fantasy 7 Remake was released on the PlayStation 4 to great success back in 2020, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is set to launch sometime early next year. The success of Final Fantasy 7 Remake has naturally sparked discussion about which other games could follow in its footsteps, and recent leaks have hinted at a Final Fantasy 10 remake.

If Square Enix is indeed looking to remake more Final Fantasy games, then Final Fantasy 6 would be a prime candidate given its imaginative setting and memorable cast of characters. It seems that even members of Square Enix itself share this sentiment, though Yoshinori Kitase admits that it might be some time before a Final Fantasy 6 remake materializes given his current commitments to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and its eventual sequel.

Final Fantasy 6 originally released for the Super Nintendo.
