Fans hoping to see a remake of Final Fantasy 6 in the style of the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth may wish to temper their expectations, as Square Enix’s Yoshinori Kitase recently suggested that one won’t be coming anytime soon. Released for the Super NES in 1994, Final Fantasy 6 took players to a mystical world inspired by the Second Industrial Revolution, where a group of freedom fighters rebels against the oppressive Gestahl Empire. Final Fantasy 6 would earn widespread acclaim for its emotional plot, vivid 2D graphics, and memorable characters like the young human/esper heroine Terra Branford and the clownlike villain Kefka Palazzo.
Final Fantasy 6 has been rereleased on many platforms in the decades following its initial launch and was even included in the updated Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection that was finally ported to consoles last April. However, since the advent of Final Fantasy 7 Remake in 2020, fans have been wishing for a similar reimagining of Final Fantasy 6 on modern hardware, and certain Square Enix developers have expressed their desire to work on such a project - including Square Enix Vice President and Final Fantasy 7 Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase.
Final Fantasy 6 Should Follow in Dragon Quest 3's Footsteps
As one of the most-requested remakes of a Final Fantasy game, Final Fantasy 6 should follow the approach taken by the upcoming DQ3 remake.
However, Yoshinori Kitase was less optimistic on the subject of a Final Fantasy 6 remake during an interview with French YouTuber Julien Chièze. As translated by the Shinra Archaeology Department Twitter account, Kitase stated that while there are plenty of people within his company who would love to remake Final Fantasy 6, such a title would take a very long time to produce. He pointed out that the past two Final Fantasy 7 Remake games have taken up to 10 years to finish, and suspects that a Final Fantasy 6 remake would take twice as long due to the latter having more characters and being a larger undertaking overall.
A Final Fantasy 6 Remake Would Be Bigger Than FF7 Remake
Yoshinori Kitase went on to say how disappointed he is that this is the case, but his reasons for why a Final Fantasy 6 remake might not happen in the foreseeable future do make sense. After all, the FF7 Remake series still has one last installment to go after Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launches on February 29. However, it is worth noting that Kitase’s words seem to refer to an expanded take on Final Fantasy 6 in the style of FF7 Remake, and some Twitter users have argued that they would be happy enough with a direct remake of the original game’s storyline.
In the wake of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and its sequels, fans have been forming their wishlists for other mainline Final Fantasy entries to be reimagined with modern graphics and voice acting - and Final Fantasy 6 is at the top of many of them. Unfortunately for players hoping to see a Final Fantasy 6 remake, it doesn’t seem like Square Enix is going to announce such a project any time soon, especially not with Yoshinori Kitase and his team still developing the Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga.
