Summary

  • The first PC patch for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth focuses on stability and bug fixes.
  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was released for PC on January 23, 2025.
  • While the game has seen incredible player numbers on PC, some players have reported performance issues.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth just received its first PC update patch, which addresses some of the recent port’s stability issues. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was released on Steam and the Epic Games Store on January 23, nearly a full year after it launched to ample praise on the PS5. While this PC port doesn’t include any extra content, it does feature enhanced graphics and boosted frame rates on systems that can support them, allowing gamers who missed out on the adventure the first time around to experience the sights of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s world like never before.

So far, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is off to a great start on PC, with Steam reporting that the sequel gathered roughly three times as many concurrent players during its first weekend as Final Fantasy 7 Remake did when it was released on PC in 2021. However, while Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth looks as good as it ever did on PC, some players have reported performance issues like crashes, dropping frame rates, and questionably rendered textures during the game’s open-world sections.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi clarifies his previous statements about the nature of Cloud and Aerith's relationship.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s first PC update patch has just been released, as announced on the game’s official Steam page. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Version 1.001 primarily focuses on improving the game’s overall stability by fixing numerous bugs and glitches. The graphics setting will now be automatically set to “Low” while playing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on the Steam Deck for the first time, with any setting adjustments being saved on future sessions. Additionally, the default setting for “Anti-Aliasing Method” is now automatically set to “DLSS” while playing on a PC that supports Nvidia DLSS. Lastly, the DirectStorage Dynamic Link Library is now updated to the latest version.

Part of the appeal of the newly updated PC port of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is that it is much easier to create and install mods on the PC platform, and gamers have wasted little time tweaking the base game in various ways. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi has even voiced his support of modding and admits to using a few mods himself, even as he cautions players to be mindful of what they are installing.

Even if fans choose to forgo modding, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will hopefully run smoother thanks to its first official PC update patch. The game is already a hit on Steam, especially since it is currently being offered at a special discount until February 5, 2025. Meanwhile, Square Enix is already working on the third and final installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi recently confirming that the game’s story is already completed and the project is now in active development.
