The director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has provided an update on how the process of bringing the game to the Nintendo Switch 2 is going, with some promising news. Though Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth originally launched back in early 2024, and the Switch 2 came out in late 2025, fans are currently still waiting for the game to arrive on Nintendo's newest console.
Final Fantasy 7 has something of a peculiar history with Nintendo, as the original 1997 game was the first title in the franchise to launch on a non-Nintendo system. Final Fantasy got its start on the NES, eventually branching out onto the Super Nintendo. However, Final Fantasy 7's development pivoted to the Sony PlayStation instead, largely due to the system using CD-ROMs, allowing for more flexibility and storage. Though Final Fantasy 7 Remake skipped the original Switch, the game finally arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 earlier in January.
Final Fantasy 7 Director Weighs In On the 'Original vs Remake' Debate
Square Enix director Naoki Hamaguchi states whether new Final Fantasy 7 players should play the original game from 1997 or the 2020 remake first.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Provides Update on the Game's Switch 2 Port
During a launch event for Final Fantasy 7 Remake on the Nintendo Switch 2 at the New York Nintendo Store, director Naoki Hamaguchi shared some information with Polygon on how the sequel is progressing for Switch 2. Bringing up the sequel, Hamaguchi stated that the game is now "built" for the Switch 2, but there's still work to be done. He noted that Square Enix's engineers are putting in a lot of work to polish and optimize the game for Nintendo Switch 2. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Integrade has received a largely positive response from critics and players on the Switch 2, but there's a big difference in size and scope between the two games, which is making it more challenging for the team.
Naoki added that the team's engineers are "very passionate" about what they're doing, and that he has upmost confidence that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will deliver the experience that fans are waiting for once it does arrive on the Switch 2. Additionally, he noted that he hopes to be able to provide further details on its progress "in the very near future." Combined with the initial Switch 2 build of the game being complete, and fans may be able to look forward to the second game in the trilogy sooner than some may have expected.
Naoki noted that when compared to other game consoles on the market, the specs on the Nintendo Switch 2 are "a little bit on the lower-end," and that he has seen other publishers experiencing some struggles to get their games working smoothly on the system. However, that hasn't stopped some developers from producing simultaneous releases on the Switch 2 and other systems, like Resident Evil Requiem, which will launch on the Switch 2 alongside PS5, PC, and Xbox Series consoles. With that said, the third entry in the FF7 Remake trilogy is likely to push hardware limits even harder, and the game doesn't have an official release window yet, so players may end up waiting until 2027 or later for the third part, regardless of the system they choose.
Final Fantasy's Future on the Nintendo Switch 2
While Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is confirmed to eventually come to the Switch 2, there are other games that players have been curious about getting the Nintendo port treatment. The developers have hinted at the possibility of both MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 and Final Fantasy 16 making their way to the Switch 2, but nothing has been officially confirmed just yet. In the meantime, a considerable number of the series' classics have been brought to the Switch and Switch 2 over the years.
