Summary
- Square Enix mapped out the plot of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, in addition to finalizing its concept.
- The game is now in active development.
- Square Enix won't "cheat" with FF7 Remake Part 3's Highwind by treating it as a fast travel system, but will instead allow players to use the airship to freely fly around the map.
The third game in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy is in active development, a senior Square Enix official has revealed. This project status update was shared during a recent conference talk, which also yielded one more detail about what Square Enix has in store for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake threequel.
The second entry in the RPG trilogy debuted in February 2024, releasing to widespread critical acclaim. And while Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth ended up being one of the highest-rated games in the long-running series, Square Enix said in May that the game fell short of sales expectations.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Falls Short of Sales Expectations
Popular RPG title Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth seems to be struggling to make money for Square Enix despite a successful launch.
Nevertheless, the third and final entry in the trilogy is presently in the works and has already reached a significant milestone. During a recent appearance at the G-CON 2024 convention in South Korea, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that Square Enix mapped out the third game's plot and locked in its overall concept, marking the completion of its pre-production phase. As a result, FF7 Remake Part 3 is already in active development, Kitase explained, as first reported by 4Gamer.
FF7 Remake Part 3 Won't 'Cheat' With the Highwind Airship
While the company officials were mostly tight-lipped about the project's details, there was one aspect of the game that Hamaguchi proved willing to discuss during his convention appearance: the Highwind. Ever since Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 will feature the iconic airship, fans have been speculating about how the aircraft is going to be implemented. Some of the more pessimistic predictions were that the Highwind will simply be a substitute for a fast travel system.
Hamaguchi has now confirmed that this won't be the case. "We will not cheat with the system for the airship," he said, adding that the game will provide players with the freedom to actually fly around the map. Square Enix opted to take on this challenge largely because the Highwind will play an important part in the story of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, making it crucial to allow players to experience the game's world from a "higher perspective," Hamaguchi revealed.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 still lacks an official release window. The first entry in the remake trilogy took roughly five years to develop, while Rebirth was completed in about four. The shorter development time is plausibly a result of Square Enix being able to reuse some of the FF7 Remake assets for FF7 Rebirth. Since asset creation is one of the biggest bottlenecks in modern AAA development, FF7 Remake Part 3 could potentially be completed even faster than its predecessor now that Square Enix has even more resources it can reuse.
